In March 1984 the Longhorn Country & Western Saloon was opened and served the needs of the US military stationed in Stuttgart for an American-style restaurant. The name is based on the Texan variety of beef . The restaurant quickly became well known, even beyond Germany's borders. On the weekends, live bands like Truck Stop and Dave Dudley were part of the regular program. After the news channel CNN reported on the bar in June 1984, visitors from the USA traveled to Stuttgart to visit the bar.

At the end of 1984 the first public male striptease nationwide took place there . At that time, the strippers were US soldiers; no men were allowed in the audience. This event had a violent reaction at the time, according to the authorities, who imposed fines on the operators of the LKA because "non-authorized personal performances" were carried out on the premises. However, they were not impressed by it and followed the philosophy that since Male-Strip originated in the USA, US citizens in Germany also have the right to live their culture. Other typical US events followed, such as topless women's boxing , mud wrestling and the wet T-shirt contest that was particularly popular in Florida .

After the concert agencies became aware of the venue in 1987, Nina Hagen successfully used the LKA-Longhorn as a concert hall. This was followed by Bobby Womack , Neon Judgment , The Fuzztones , Johnny Guitar Watson , The Pogues , Linton Kwesi Johnson and many others.

When almost all US soldiers were withdrawn from Germany in 1992 after the Gulf War, the operators restructured the restaurant and the name was renamed to the current name. The abbreviation LKA stands for Longhorn Culture Exchange. In June 1993 the restaurant was closed for a two-month renovation. After that, the LKA-Longhorn was run as a disco , concert hall and venue for promotion parties, for example for Philip Morris or Daimler-Benz .

social commitment

Promotion of young talent in the LKA-Longhorn

In addition to a diverse concert and disco program, the LKA-Longhorn is committed to promoting young bands. In order to offer the youngsters their own platform, the Star Club or the LKA Live Club was founded in 1994 in the LKA Longhorn to support the Stuttgart music scene. Up until the beginning of 2005, Stuttgart newcomer bands were given the opportunity to make a real live performance with professional technology and guidance. The in-house organizer at the time, Thommy Mikkat, was in charge of promoting young talent until early 2005.

Newcomer festivals

For organizational reasons, the management decided not to end the issue of promoting young talent after 2005. Rather, she entered into a cooperation with various organizers in order to be able to continue to offer young artists regular competitions and to offer them a chance to stand on a stage. To date, hundreds of groups have stood on the LKA stage. Some also made it into the public eye, such as the Pforzheim group Fools Garden in 1994.

The LKA received several prizes for this special effort in the sense of pop-cultural diversity. Supported newcomer festivals and events are the Emergenza Festival and the Youngster Ball, including the band Boost Battle and the Metal festival only the tough come in the garden .
