The Porto was a cruise ship that was built as an Istra at the Brodogradiliste Uljanik shipyard in Yugoslavia for the shipping company Jadranska Linijska Plovidba . She had a sister ship with the Dalmacija, which was built at the same time .

history

The first 28 years

The Istra has been prepared by the 12 July 1964 stack left. Almost a year later, the maiden voyage started on May 30, 1965 . The Istra offered 165 passengers in first class and 52 passengers in tourist class. As with the Dalmacija , the ship offered cruises in the eastern Mediterranean between Europe and the Middle East, which had a duration of 14 days. During this two-week route, the following ports were called: Venice , Trieste , Rijeka , Split , Dubrovnik , Piraeus , Alexandria , Port Said , Beirut , Limassol , Heraklion . Then the return trip took place via Piraeus and Dubrovnik back to Venice. When the Six Day War broke out , these routes were changed significantly.

The Istra was very popular in Germany at the time and was booked by various charter companies. These were Seetours , Gastager, Touropa and Intermaris. Despite the great success and bookings, the ship was put up for sale by the owner after 28 years. In 1974 and 1975 the Istra drove in the Caribbean and ran u. a. the ports of Martinique , Guadeloupe , St. Lucia , Venezuela (La Gueira), Curaçao , Trinidad and Tobago , Dominican Republic , Puerto Rico (St. Juan), Saint Thomas and Grenada .

Russian owner

In May 1993 the Russian Goring Shipping Company bought the ship and renamed it Astra . It was registered in Ukraine . The Russian travel and shipping company Caravella Shipping Company Ltd , based in Moscow, took over the management . Some modifications were made to the ship. It received a blue stripe around the entire hull and a blue painted chimney with the logo of the Caravella Shipping Company Ltd in red and white. With the ship, the new operators again targeted the European market and chartered it to Eurocruises and Mono Company . After a short time, Neckermann Seereisen added the Astra to its catalog. Again it was a great success as the size was very appealing for many guests.

Change of name to Astra I

In 1996 the Astra at Neckermann Seereisen was replaced by the larger Astra II , formerly Golden Odyssey . Then that was Astra in Panama registered and Astra I renamed. The name change did not bring the ship any success. The marketing of the Astra I was carried out exclusively on the Russian cruise market, which led to financial difficulties. During a cruise in 1997, the ship was chained at the berth in Haifa , Israel , because Goring Shipping had not paid outstanding invoices. As a result, the Astra I was auctioned off in 1999. Then there was a transfer to Lisbon .

Use from 2000 to scrapping

In 2000, US $ 15 million was raised for a total renovation and the ship was completely refurbished. The bridge and boat deck were moved towards the bow , the front windows of the promenade deck were changed and partially removed to make space for the main lounge, bar and casino . However, a large part of the glazed promenade was preserved on both sides of the ship and called the winter garden . The new high-quality interior was designed by Arminio Lozzi and George Potamianos, who placed particular emphasis on light effects and soft colors. The Astra I was renamed Arion and marketed by Arcalia Management . Until September 2012 the ship operated for Classic International Cruises . These marketed and operated several classic cruise ships worldwide. After that, the ship was decommissioned because the shipping company had filed for bankruptcy. At the beginning of 2013 it was sold to a shipping company (Portuscale Cruises) in Portugal, which wanted to operate it again as a cruise ship. In May 2013 the ship was renamed Porto . It was launched in Lisbon . In September 2018 it was sold to Turkey for demolition. On October 21, 2018, the ship left Lisbon towing the Opal for Aliaga. On November 5, 2018, the ship was stranded for demolition.
