Poya is a municipality in New Caledonia , which since 1989 has been divided into a northern part, in the Northern Province , and a southern part, in the Southern Province . Most of the residents live in the northern part.
The community is mostly located on the main island of Grande Terre , but there are also other small islands off the coast. The distance to the capital Nouméa is 209 km.
The highest point is in the north of the Massif de Boulinda with 1330 m.
In Poya there is an Eramet nickel mining area (Népoui Mine) and a loading port ( 21 ° 20 ′ S , 164 ° 59 ′ E ). (See also: Garnierit and Népouit )

history
Poya grew out of a camp that housed road workers. A military base was later established here, which existed until 1884.
Facilities and sights
With its town hall, hospital, post office and police station, Poya is an important administrative center in northern New Caledonia. The church, consecrated in 1993, is particularly worth seeing.
