The Sara Sara district is located in the Páucar del Sara Sara province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on January 2, 1985. It has an area of ​​85 km². The 2017 census counted 537 residents. In 1993 the population was 836, in 2007 it was 800. The district administration is located in the 3300  m high village of Quilcata with 486 inhabitants (as of 2017). Quilcata is 12 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Pausa .

Geographical location

The Sara Sara district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest of the Páucar del Sara Sara province. It is located on the northern flank of the 5505  m high eponymous volcano Sarasara (also Sara Sara). The Río Pararca flows east along the northern district boundary.

The Sara Sara district borders in the southwest on the Puyusca district ( Parinacochas province ), in the far northwest on the Lampa , in the north on the Pararca district and in the east and southeast on the Pausa district .
