R + B = Ruth Brown is a rhythm and blues album that the American singer Ruth Brown recorded in January and February 1997 for Bullseye Blues , a sub-label of Rounder Records .

General

Brown has been at the helm of the music business since winning a talent competition at New York's famous Apollo Theater in 1944 . Producer Scott Billington leads Ruth Brown back to her roots, accompanied by an excellent New Orleans band. She dedicated the album to her father, from whom she got her voice, and to her mother, from whom she received her will and strength. When she heard the tapes of the recordings, Ruth Brown cried and said that she didn't know she was still on it.

Notes on the songs

  • " I Don't Know " producer Scott Billington heard Brown comment in a radio interview that she sang the song with Billie Eckstine in the early 1950s when she was out with Count Basie and his orchestra, but had never recorded the song. He suggested that she record him with Johnny Adams , which worked great.
  • " False Friend Blues " is a reunion of old friends. Clarence Gatemouth Brown played guitar on her first demo tape for Atlantic Records in 1949. The song was written by Ivory Joe Hunter , who also wrote "And I Making the Same Mistake Again," the b-side of her first hit, " Teardrops from My Eyes " Has.
  • She recorded " I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town " with Bonnie Raitt , where she was a guest on an album. During the recordings, they changed the male point of view of the text. Brown had liked the song since it was a hit with Louis Jordan in the 1940s . Jordan was the band leader on her first engagement at the Apollo Theater.
