history

In March 1877 the savings and loan association Lauf eV was founded at the suggestion of the watchmaker and specialty goods dealer Konrad Michael Schmidt from Lauf. The association consisted of 40 members who were composed of agriculture , handicrafts , trade and workers . According to the founding protocol, one reason for the foundation was the "unscrupulous money-lending" by private moneylenders, which particularly oppressed farmers and small businesses. The form of the cooperative , tried and tested by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen in his native Westerwald , also showed in Lauf an der Pegnitz how to create a functioning, locally anchored savings and credit system for agriculture, small businesses and workers in solidarity self-help . On July 31, 1880, the savings and loan association Lauf was entered in the register of cooperatives at the Nuremberg Local Court. The Laufer Kreditgenossenschaft is the oldest Raiffeisen bank in Middle Franconia and one of the first in Bavaria . With the entry in the cooperative register, the association became a credit cooperative in the spirit of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen.

Hans Schmidt, master chimney sweeper in Lauf, took over the board office of the savings and loan association Lauf eG in 1890. Under his leadership, the cooperative established itself in the city of Lauf an der Pegnitz and got over initial difficulties and "hostility". In 1893 the cooperative already had 193 members. Hans Schmidt was one of the most influential personalities in the city of Lauf an der Pegnitz between 1890 and 1925; The chimney sweeper, who was born in 1856, was involved in associations, in the newly emerging Catholic parish and in public life. In 1912 he was elected to the municipal council and in 1919 as the city's first mayor.

Between 1896 (Schönberg) and 1925 (Hormersdorf) were founded in the district of Lauf an der Pegnitz u. a. in Günthersbühl , Großbellhofen , Kirchröttenbach , Osternohe , Ottensoos, Rückersdorf (Middle Franconia), Schönberg (Lauf), Simonshofen and Weigenhofen Raiffeisen credit cooperatives. In contrast to the Lauf savings and loan association, the rural credit cooperatives also operated the classic goods business with seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural supplies. Particularly noteworthy here are Ottensoos with its own warehouse on the railway line to the left of the Pegnitz, Simmelsdorf and Schönberg. In terms of total sales, some of the rural credit cooperatives - above all Rückersdorf (Middle Franconia) - outperform that of the district town of Lauf, but not in terms of membership.

During National Socialism, the credit unions in the district of Lauf an der Pegnitz were brought into line and only regained their independence after the Second World War. The economic development of the following decades showed that it was precisely this form of cooperative society that was viable. In contrast, the labor and processing cooperatives supported by the Nazi government lost more and more ground.

In 1945 the savings and loan association Lauf eG, with almost 300 members, was the Raiffeisen cooperative with the largest number of members in the district of Lauf an der Pegnitz. In larger towns such as Ottensoos, Rückersdorf (Middle Franconia) or Schönberg (Lauf) the cooperatives had between 100 and 200 members, while in the smaller towns the 100 was often not reached. Raiffeisen Spar- und Kreditbank eG, Lauf has therefore been the focal point of the cooperative banking system in Lauf an der Pegnitz and the surrounding area since the 1960s. Between 1962 (merger with the Raiffeisenkassen von Günthersbühl, Kersbach and Simonshofen-Dehnberg) and 1998 (merger with the Raiffeisenbank Röthenbach-Rückersdorf) it expanded its activities to almost the entire area of the district of Lauf an der Pegnitz.

Outwardly, this growth manifested itself in the new building of the main branch in 1975 at the train station in Lauf rechts der Pegnitz, from where the bank's fortunes are directed to this day. There, the Raiffeisenstrasse and the Raiffeisen monument are now commemorating the founder of the cooperative idea.

The sharp decline in the number of people employed in agriculture has made it necessary to turn to other customer groups since the 1970s. Right from the start, tradespeople, tradespeople and workers were to be found in the Laufer Kreditgenossenschaft and formed a permanent customer base.
