The Raleigh-Durham International Airport ( IATA : RDU , ICAO : KRDU ) is the airport of US cities Raleigh and Durham and is located exactly between the two cities in North Carolina . The region is also known as the Research Triangle , from which the airport logo is derived.

Location and transport links

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is 17 kilometers northwest of downtown Raleigh and 17 kilometers southeast of downtown Durham. It is entirely within the Cedar Fork Township area . Interstate 40 runs southwest of the airport, while Interstate 540 runs northwest of the airport and US Highway 70 runs northeast of the airport.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is integrated into the local public transport system by buses , the GoTriangle Route 100 regularly connects the airport with the city center of Raleigh.

Runways

Raleigh-Durham International Airport has three runways . The longest runway is marked 05L / 23R, is 3,048 meters long and 46 meters wide. The parallel runway 05R / 23L is 2286 meters long and 46 meters wide. The cross wind runway is 1088 meters long and 30 meters wide. However, due to their length, only the parallel runways can be used for commercial flights, while runway 14/32 is used for general aviation . The runway 05L / 23R has a concrete pavement, while the pavement of the other runways is made of asphalt.

Passenger terminals

Raleigh-Durham International Airport has two passenger terminals . Both terminals are located between the parallel runways of the airport.

Terminal 1

Today's Terminal 1 was opened as Terminal A in 1992. On October 26, 2008, it was renamed Terminal 1 and partially modernized from 2012 to 2014.

Terminal 1 has nine gates and the same number of boarding bridges , but only five gates are in operation. It is used exclusively by Southwest Airlines , which operates domestic and international departures here.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is now the airport's most important passenger terminal. A first part was opened in October 2008, but it was not completed until January 2011.

Terminal 2 is equipped with 36 piers and just as many passenger boarding bridges, which are divided into two concourses. There are 19 gates in northeast Concourse C, the remaining 17 gates are in southwest Concourse D. In Terminal 2 there are flights from Air Canada , Alaska Airlines , Allegiant Air , American Airlines , Delta Air Lines , Frontier Airlines , Jetblue Airways , Spirit Airlines and United Airlines as well as international arrivals handled by Southwest Airlines.

Airlines and Destinations

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is used by ten airlines . The most important airline in 2019 was Delta Air Lines including Delta Connection with a market share of 30.7 percent, followed by American Airlines including American Eagle with 22.9 percent , Southwest Airlines with 18.3 percent and United Airlines including United Express with 11, 7 percent.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport offers flights to 52 domestic American destinations. There are also connections to five international destinations in North America , such as Toronto-Pearson . American Airlines has a direct connection to London Heathrow once a day , replacing the connection to London Gatwick . Delta Airlines has also been offering a daily flight to Paris-CDG since May 2016 .
