Rambo: Last Blood (formerly Rambo V: Last Blood ) is an action - thriller by Adrian Grunberg , who came into the German and the following day in the US cinemas on September 19 of 2019. It is the fifth and final installment in the Rambo film series and the sequel to John Rambo from 2008.

action

John Rambo lives on his late parents' farm and earns his living as a horse breeder. He employs Maria, his parents' housekeeper, and has a fatherly relationship with their granddaughter Gabrielle. Since Gabrielle's mother died of cancer, she is dying to meet her real father, who left her and her mother when she was a child. She can find out through a friend that he lives in Mexico. Contrary to the advice of Grandmother and Rambo, Gabrielle travels to Mexico and visits her father, who, however, does not want anything to do with her. In order to supposedly comfort her, Gabrielle's friend takes her to a bar, where she is kidnapped by human traffickers who sell young girls as forced prostitutes.

When Gabrielle does not return, Rambo also goes to Mexico to look for her. Gabrielle's friend tells him that she sold Gabrielle to the brothers Victor and Hugo Martinez's human trafficking ring. When Rambo tries to confront the brothers, he is beaten up by their thugs and seriously injured. The journalist Carmen Delgado, who has already seen Rambo in the bar, finds him and nurses him back to health. She tells Rambo what probably happened to Gabrielle and where she is being held. Rambo finds and frees Gabrielle, but she was abused, drugged and seriously injured. She dies on the way back to Arizona and Rambo buries her on his farm.

Full of hatred for the Martinez brothers, Rambo decides to seek revenge and begins setting up traps in an underground network of tunnels under the farm. He then travels to Mexico again, where he succeeds in beheading Victor Martinez and laying a trail to his farm.

With his brutal traps Rambo can eliminate the numerous attackers one after the other. At the end he nailed Hugo Martinez to a barn wall with four metal arrows of his bow in the shoulders and legs, cut his chest open and then tore his heart out of his chest. Rambo holds the dying Martinez's own still twitching heart in front of the eyes as proof of the correctness of the threat he had previously made.

Finally, Rambo, who was shot in the fighting, is sitting in his rocking chair on the terrace of his house. In the credits you can also see him riding a horse away from the farm.

reception

Reviews

Overall, the film received largely negative feedback from the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes , only 28% of the critics gave the film a positive review , Metacritic gave it a score of 27. David Morrell , author of the novel by Rambo , said on Twitter that he was ashamed to be associated with the film.

The film service called Rambo: Last Blood a “primitive finale to the film saga about the powerful one-man army, which quickly gives up any semblance of depth to become a violent killing aria. In addition to the glorification of violence, the film also repels with the racist drawing of the Mexican characters. "

Der Spiegel rated the film as a "one-dimensional and unsurprising thriller" as well as a "huge tragedy".

The Frankfurter Rundschau titled the film as "... out of the garbage can".

n-tv described the film as an “absolutely worthy end to the film series”.

Rolling Stone's Sassan Niasseri gave the film a positive review. He writes that in the film there would be violence and gore, as it has never been seen in a Rambo movie, and you can recognize certain political pattern: "Won the Vietnam Veteran 1985 in First Blood: Part II for Ronald Reagan to Jungle War still, and besides several Viet Cong also killed Russians, and he freed the Taliban from the rule of the USSR for Ronnie in 1988 in Rambo III , and killed Russians in the process, so in this fifth film many should think of Donald Trump . "Rambo go the opposite way as Trump, who wants to build a wall to keep Mexicans out of the US, lure the criminal Mexicans across the border to his ranch in Arizona to make short work of them there, Niasseri said. For the first time in 37 years of Rambo, Sylvester Stallone and his director Adrian Grünberg have succeeded in equipping a Green Beret with character and motif, as well as having family backgrounds, moral ideas and his future wishes told. He rated the film alongside Creed - Rocky's Legacy as Stallone's best film of the past 35 years.

Gross profit

The production budget of around 50 million US dollars is offset by worldwide income from cinema screenings of 91.5 million US dollars.
