Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling
Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling (born May 9, 1904 in Hanover , † December 9, 1985 in Berlin ) was a German composer .
life and work
Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling was born as the son of the chemical manufacturer Carl Schwarz .
He attended the Hanoverian Humanist High School and took piano lessons with Heinrich Lutter and C. Leonhardt , before he began studying music in Munich with Walter Braunfels from 1922 as well as in Florence and Cologne .
From 1927 to 1929 he was a student of the composer Heinrich Kaminski , who also taught Carl Orff . From 1938 Schwarz-Schilling taught at the Berlin Music Academy. His orchestral , chamber , organ and choral music as well as his solo songs are often spiritually inspired and develop a tonal language that follows the compositions of Kaminski and Johann Sebastian Bach . One of his main works is the cantata “The Message” (1979–1982).
Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling was married to the Polish-Jewish pianist Dusza von Hakrid, whom he met as a classmate with his mentor Heinrich Kaminski. After a courageous registrar in the Bavarian town of Kochel am See had successfully manipulated their papers, the family in the Third Reich lived in constant danger and was subjected to constant Gestapo interrogations. As a professor at the Berlin University of Music, Schwarz-Schilling never became a party member and remained true to his human and political convictions. His older brother Balduin Schwarz had to emigrate to the USA in 1933 because of his “non-Aryan” wife. His youngest brother Egon Schwarz was an entrepreneur. It was not until almost 20 years after Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling's death that his son Christian Schwarz-Schilling , former Federal Minister, found out. D. and High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina , during investigations on site in Poland of the true descent of his mother.
Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling was buried in the St. Matthias Cemetery in Berlin-Tempelhof .
