Reitbrook is in the marshlands situated in Hamburg neighborhood in the district Bergedorf .
In Reitbrook, dairy farms and grain cultivation determine the picture. In contrast to the other communities in the Vier- und Marschlande , the local sandy soil is not suitable for growing vegetables.
history
The first written mention of Reitbrooks goes back to the year 1162, the name refers to a wetland with quarry forest (Brook), which was overgrown with thatch (Reit). Between 1202 and 1227 Reitbrook belonged to Denmark and then fell with the marshland to Holstein . In the middle of the 14th century, Reitbrook was partially owned by the Reinbek monastery . In 1724 Duke Karl Friedrich Reitbrook pledged it to Hamburg for twenty years. However, his son Karl Peter Ulrich triggered the area again in good time.
As part of the Gottorp Treaty , Reitbrook became the property of Hamburg in 1768.
In 1937 an oil field was discovered in Reitbrook at a depth of 665 to 800 meters (later called Reitbrook-Alt to distinguish it from Reitbrook-West, which was later found ). The oil began to be extracted immediately and reached 350,000 t in 1940. already the maximum funding. Between 1937 and 1942, around 1 million tons of oil could be produced. However, the delivery rate then had to be greatly reduced. Later it was decided to convert Reitbrook-Alt from a production facility to an underground gas storage facility. This enabled another 80,000 tons to be extracted per year in 1965. In the next few years, the delivery rate continued to decrease, so that in 1985 only 29,615 tons could be extracted. This amount continued to decrease until it was 7,532 tons in 2013. A total of around 2,589,787 tons of crude oil were produced between 1937 and 2013. However, since larger quantities of crude oil were still available, GDF Suez announced in 2014 that they wanted to convert the gas storage facility back into a production facility, as they were convinced that they would be able to produce 20,000 tons of oil there every year.
In October 2015 E.ON commissioned a power-to-gas plant (wind energy is converted into hydrogen by means of electrolysis and fed into the natural gas network).
