The Rennsteigverein 1896 e. V. (RV for short, rarely also RSV) is a hiking club of the Thuringian Forest and the Franconian Forest based in Zapfendorf . It is entered in the register of associations of the Bamberg District Court (VR 345). The association was founded in 1896 in the forester's house Waidmannsheil, located directly on the Rennsteig . The forester's house no longer exists. It was near Steinbach am Wald in Upper Franconia .

history

The Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest , Thuringian Slate Mountains and Franconian Forest became known nationwide through numerous publications and lectures by members of the Rennsteig Association, including first and foremost the Arnstadt high school teacher Johannes Bühring , the Schnepfenthal folklorist Luise Gerbing and the Greiz high school teacher Ludwig Hertel .

The writer August Trinius hiked the Rennsteig in July 1889 in order to record as many impressions and material as possible for his eight-volume series Das Thüringer Wanderbuch . His book Der Rennstieg - A hike from the Werra to the Saale was published in Berlin in 1890 (Trinius - like von Scheffel, by the way - always used the southwest Thuringian form -stieg, which, however, did not prevail). As a supplement to this bestseller, Alfred Roßner submitted the book Der Rennsteig des Thuringian Forest now and earlier in 1892 . Now it was again Ludwig Hertel who in 1892 developed the essential ideas for the establishment of the Thuringian Forest Association and who contacted the other persons mentioned by letter. In the meantime Johann Bühring had also created a route map of the Thuringian Forest . The forester's house Weidmannsheil (also Waldhaus) near Steinbach am Wald was chosen as the founding place and first seat of the Rennsteig Association, here Ludwig Hertel had presented the idea of the association in the guest book.

The ten founding members met on May 24, 1896 for a constituent meeting, Ludwig Hertel ( Hildburghausen ) was elected as the first chairman of the Rennsteigverein, the clerk of the merchant C. Bauer (Erfurt), and the treasurer of the Arnstadt bank manager vom Dieck .

At this time the Thuringian Forest Association already existed , the Rennsteig association founders emphasized their friendly feelings towards this established homeland association, they did not see themselves as rivals. In the first year the number of members rose to 34, a contribution of 2 marks (1871) was used to cover material costs. An R was chosen as the association's identification mark and made available to each association member in the form of pins .

Hertel wrote a handwritten circular letter as the association's news paper and circulated it by post. It was named: Das Mareile - in memory of the daughter of the innkeeper from the forester's house Waidmannsheil.

With the expansion of the railway network, day travelers and school classes were increasingly able to reach the Rennsteig as a short trip destination. Large numbers of guesthouses, hikers' hostels, excursion restaurants and observation towers have now been built to provide them with care and accommodation. The constant improvements in the tourist infrastructure made it necessary to continuously update the hiking maps and descriptions.

An honor badge was introduced to encourage the sporty part of hiking . It was handed out for demonstrably performed long-distance hikes (card with stamp entries) and made the association even more popular.

In 1907 the first ski run was carried out. In 1914 the first ski touring department was founded. In 1921 the 500 honor badge was issued. In 1922, the memorial for fallen soldiers of the Rennsteig Club and deserving members was inaugurated on the Rennsteig near Ruhla. In 1928 the Rennsteigverein joined the Association of German Hiking and Mountain Associations. In 1929 the 1000 honor badge was issued. In 1940, at the request of the association, the Rennsteig with its numerous historical border and coat of arms stones was designated as a monument. In 1944 the Mareile had to be discontinued as a magazine due to the war (problems with material procurement)

After the Second World War, parts of the Rennsteig were no longer accessible due to the cordoning off of the inner-German border , and many club members had died or left Thuringia. Julius Kober, the last chairman of the association, also emigrated to Zapfendorf near Bamberg . Here he began to recruit new members for the Upper Franconian area in 1950 and re-founded the Rennsteig Club as a homeland club. Until 1961, annual club meetings took place in the Waldhaus Weidmannsheil, in which numerous Thuringian old runners also took part. After Kober's death in 1970 the association had 400 members, a dissolution could be prevented because other associations (Franconian Switzerland Association, Haßberge Association, Steigerwaldklub, et al) came to help with organizational matters.

Others

Association language

It is interesting that some of our own word creations were created in club life. The hike on the Rennsteig is called Runst and the Rennsteig hikers greet each other - according to an amendment to the statutes adopted in 1900 with the exclamation: "Gut Runst". A play on words served as a banal explanation: Runst comes from running - like heat from burning! .

Waymarking

The marking of the Rennsteig hiking trail uses a white "R". It is called Mareile, in memory of the daughter of the innkeeper from the forester's house Waidmannsheil. In contrast to this, the Sallmannshäuser Rennsteig was later marked with "S" and the Breiter Rennsteig with "B".

Songs

Germany's first pocket song book was published by the Rennsteig Association as early as 1914.

Personalities

Reinhold Jubelt was an active member of the Rennsteigverein founded in 1896 from 1902 and was a Rennewart for over 25 years. In 1906 Reinhold Jubelt became Rennewart for 349 members, and in 1925 for 966 members. In 1928 Reinhold Jubelt became a deputy leader. After his death in 1934, a Douglas fir was planted and a memorial stone unveiled in his honor, in recognition of his services to the Rennsteig Club, at the founding house of the Rennsteig Club at the Waldhaus "Weidmannsheil" near Steinbach in Franconia .
