action

Claire Redfield is still looking for her missing brother, Chris. After she was kidnapped in the laboratories of the Umbrella group in France, she found herself on the small island of Rockford Island, which Umbrella uses as the location of a research facility. On the island, she is freed from her prison cell by guard Juan Raval. He informs her that the T-virus has broken out on the island. While trying to escape the island, Claire meets fellow prisoner Steve Burnside; both plan their escape from the island together. At the same time she makes the acquaintance of Alfred Ashford, who seems to rule the island together with his twin sister Alexia Ashford and tries to kill them. Meanwhile, Albert Wesker, a former member of STARS (Special Tactics And Rescue Service) and double agent on behalf of Umbrella Corporation, is on a mission to obtain a sample of the T-Veronica virus developed by Alexia Ashford. His unit is responsible for the T-virus outbreak on the island.

During the game, Claire and Steve repeatedly run into Alfred, as well as his sister. In the course of the further action it turns out that Alexia is not on the island at all. Rather, she has been in cold sleep in another umbrella facility in Antarctica for 15 years after injecting herself with the T-Veronica virus she created. Claire and Steve realize that the Alexia they have seen in the meantime was none other than Alfred himself in women's clothes, who, probably out of grief over the loss of his sister, went through a kind of split personality.

Claire and Steve manage to take off from the island in a plane, but Alfred (in his role as Alexia) switches it to autopilot and sends it to the research facility in Antarctica. He himself also goes there to wake up his sister. After another confrontation, Alfred is wounded, falls into a crevice and appears to be dead. However, he survived and dragged himself to Alexia's cold room. Before he dies, he will witness her awakening. Alexia then creates huge tentacles from the ground, which bring Claire and Steve back to the base.

Meanwhile, Chris Redfield arrives at Rockford Island in search of his sister Claire. There Raval tells him that Claire has already escaped from the island. While searching the island, Chris encounters Wesker. It comes to a fight, but Chris is not up to Wesker because Wesker has superhuman powers and reflexes due to a virus prototype, which he injected himself at the end of Resident Evil 1. Just before Wesker wants to kill him, Alexia appears laughing on one of the surveillance monitors. Surprised by the fact that she is alive, Wesker sets off for Antarctica, leaving Chris behind. But he also manages to get to the research station and finally meets Claire there.

Since Claire and Steve were separated after their unsuccessful attempt to escape, the protagonist starts looking for her companion. She finds him imprisoned and realizes that Alexia has infected him with the T-Veronica virus. Steve mutates into a reptilian monster and pursues Claire. She escapes into a prison cell, where she is attacked by another of Alexia's tentacles. Despite the mutation, Steve was able to keep the core of his personality. When he sees that Claire's life is in danger, he breaks through the cell wall and chops off the tentacle, fatally wounding him. He transforms back into his human form and confesses his love to Claire. Then he dies. Claire then breaks down in tears and remains trapped.

At the same time, Chris and Wesker face Alexia. Wesker is overwhelmed by Alexia's strength, flees and leaves Chris alone with Alexia. Chris defeats them first and activates the self-destruct mechanism to unlock all doors of the facility. So he can free Claire. When the two try to escape, Alexia appears again, but Chris is able to defeat her. He escapes to the emergency elevator and is confronted again with Wesker, who has caught Claire. Chris convinces him to let Claire go and has to face him again. An explosion separates the fighters and Wesker escapes. Chris and Claire flee in a fighter plane while the whole complex collapses around them. Chris vows to his sister to put an end to Umbrella's machinations once and for all.

Characters

As with the predecessor Resident Evil 3: Nemesis , you cannot select a character before starting the game. At a certain game progress, you automatically switch to another.

Playable characters

  • Claire Redfield: sister of Chris Redfield. Her curiosity made Claire an extraordinary student - who also loves to ride a motorcycle. In search of her brother, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances, she ends up in Raccoon City and then in Paris in a laboratory of the Umbrella Corporation. After a short time, however, she is caught and put in prison on a desert island.
  • Steve Burnside: Although Steve is young and often daring, he has a good character. He has an argument with his family. Why remains a mystery. He and his father were captured and put in Umbrella Prison, on the same island that Claire is on. They meet at the beginning of the game.
  • Chris Redfield: Chris is a shrewd agent with an iron will, a member of the STARS special unit and an expert in handling weapons. As a former Air Force pilot, he's tough to beat in the air too. Leon S. Kennedy informs him that Claire could be found on Rockfort Island. Chris immediately starts looking.

Supporting characters

  • Alexia Ashford: She's a genius, which is why she is called the rebirth of Veronica (first head of the Ashford family). Alexia became the head of the Antarctic facility at the age of 10 because of her highly developed intelligence. On the side, she created the T-Veronica virus and administered it to herself after tests on her own father were unsuccessful and he mutated into a kind of superzombie. In order to slowly get her body used to the virus, she went into a cold sleep, from which she has now awakened again 15 years later with a mutated body.
  • Alfred Ashford: twin brother of Alexia. Because of his lower intelligence, Alexia was always preferred to him, but he still loves his sister idolatrously and is a slave to her. After graduating from an English university, he became the head of the base on Rockfort Island, and Umbrella gave him the authority to command the base.
  • Albert Wesker: The former STARS captain and secret umbrella agent has, contrary to expectations, survived the events surrounding the "mansion incident" and is now making an appearance again with the aim of getting the T-Veronica virus into his possession. Since he has infected himself with a special form of the T-virus, he has superhuman strength and speed.
  • Rodrigo Juan Raval: Leader of the third protection force of the European Umbrella Laboratory and at the same time head of the prisoner transport unit. He had captured Claire and shipped her to Rockfort Island. He lets her go because he disgusted his service.

Game principle and technology

Resident Evil Code: Veronica is a 3D action adventure . For polygons composite, three-dimensional figures act before also three-dimensional scenes. The player controls his respective character through the game world with the respective control device of his hardware. The character can find objects that either provide him with information for the progress of the plot (e.g. diaries) or which he can use in the game against opponents (e.g. weapons). The game character can defend himself against opponents by means of weapons; aiming with firearms takes place automatically. In contrast to a third-person shooter , fighting does not make up the focus of the game action, rather the player usually drives the game forward by exploring the game world and avoiding contact with hostile NPCs .

Production notes

Resident Evil Code: Veronica was the first game in the "Resident Evil" series that did not rely on pre-rendered backgrounds, but calculated the entire scenery in real time. The basic game principle of the dynamic 3rd person view and the so-called "tank control" typical for the game series and the inventory management through networked chests has remained.

The game was initially developed by Capcom in collaboration with Sega exclusively for their own Dreamcast console, but due to the weak sales of Dreamcast, it was also implemented for PlayStation 2 and later for GameCube. A special feature of the Dreamcast version was the ability to use the mini display of the optionally available VMU to display the current health status of the character as well as the ammunition level of the currently equipped weapon.

Compared to the other parts of the series, "Resident Evil Code: Veronica" did not rely so much on the explicit representation of violence, but rather on frightening the player psychologically. So could z. B. In contrast to the previous parts, for the first time no limbs are shot. However, "Resident Evil Code: Veronica X" was indexed on March 29, 2003 and "Resident Evil Code: Veronica" on May 31, 2003. However, this indexing was canceled prematurely in April 2014. A re-examination of the USK showed uncut the age rating from 16 years.

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the first Resident Evil part , Code: Veronica X was released in September 2011 together with Resident Evil 4 , as a high definition version for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 . While the game will be offered exclusively as a disc version in Japan from September 8, 2011 under the name Resident Evil: Revival Selection , it was released for the remaining countries via the respective online sales platforms Xbox Live (September 27, 2011) and PlayStation Network ( September 28 , 2011) September 2011) as download. However, due to the indexing that existed at the time, the game was not offered via the German sales channel. The game is now also available on the German sales channel.
