action

Best friends and nerds Lewis and Gilbert enroll at Adams College to study computer science. While they were there, they met the Alpha Betas, a student fraternity that mainly consisted of football players. When they burn down their frat house during the evening binge, they are offered the dormitory of the freshmen, which is why they and Lewis and Gilbert have to move out and are quartered in a sports hall on camp beds. While some are lucky enough to find accommodation in other fraternities, the rest can only hope. By chance they find an old house in need of renovation, which they renovate and move into with the other outcasts. But shortly after moving in, they are harassed again by the Alpha Betas and their sisterhood, the Pi Delta Pis, so that the friends want to complain to the Greek Council about it. Unfortunately, the Alpha Betas and their quarterback and leader Stan Gable hold the presidency of the council, which is why they reject the concerns of the friends on the grounds that only connections can call the council.

After countless application attempts and rejections, the friends at Lambda Lambda Lambda (Tri-Lämmer) have the option of a trial membership. And so they prepare a fraternity party for their President Jefferson to show that they are worthy of the Tri-Lambs. After some problems about missing women and serenity, a venerable student party is celebrated with the help of marijuana and the female nerds of the Omega Mys, which is only ruined by a few pigs. The Alpha Betas and Pis collected these together and let them run to the party to both humiliate and mock their friends. However, this only leads to the nerds taking revenge. With a panty raid, they break into the Pis' frat house to distract the girls from the fact that they are also installing surveillance cameras to take nude pictures. They also take revenge on the Alpha Betas by sneaking into the Alpha Beta's changing room and smearing the players' groin guard with an extremely effective heat cream. Jefferson is so impressed with the nerds' ingenuity that he names them full members of the Tri-Lambs.

But the Alpha Betas don't let that deter them and set a big fire on fire to scare off the nerds. When they want to complain again, they don't get very far, as the Greek council, under the presidency of the Alpha Betas, is blocking everything. So the nerds have to win the presidency at the university games. And so, like all other student associations, they take part there. While they dominate all intelligence competitions, the Alpha Betas win all competitions where sheer power is required. In the charity contest, the Alpha Betas also take the lead, while the nerds can only win through the nude photos of the Pis that they previously took with their hidden cameras. The nerds win the final show act thanks to an electronic music show. And so Gilbert is elected as the new President of the Greek Council.

But the Alpha Betas find it difficult to come to terms with their defeat, which is why they demolish and devastate the house that the nerds renovated. When Gilbert tries to confront them, they also only harass him. The whole Alpha Betas football team is about to beat him up when suddenly the black athletes of the Tri-Lambs appear and stop the Alpha Betas. Gilbert then gives an inspiring and moral speech about being tired of being pushed around and bullied all the time. And so he urges everyone to join him who is fed up with it. After all the assembled students have joined him, the Alpha Betas are left alone.

criticism

The film received good reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes website counted 30 positive reviews of 43 professional reviews, which corresponds to a value of 70%. The film was also well received by the general public, as 73% of 56,453 users rated the film positively (as of September 2019). This, in turn, is generally confirmed by the online film archive IMDb , another platform on which normal users can submit their film reviews, because there 46,283 users gave the film an average of 6.6 out of 10 possible points (as of September 2019).

In contrast, Lawrence van Gelder criticized the New York Times for the fact that the film lacks any comedy and that it is condescending towards women and blacks (It is the absence of genuine comedy that exposes glaringly the film's fundamental attitude of condescension and scorn toward blacks and women) . In addition, he only has a superficial message of tolerance, compassion and fairness (superficial message of tolerance, compassion and fair play.) .

"Unimaginative clothes with sexist gags."

"More rough jokes than pointed satire."

publication

After the film had its US theatrical release on July 20, 1984 and grossed US $ 1.5 million in 364 theaters and a total of US $ 40.9 million in the US on the opening weekend on a budget of US $ 8 million it was published in September 1986 as a direct-to-video production in Germany.

The film received three sequels. While Die Supertrottel (1987) was still in the cinemas, Operation Kleinhirn (1992) and Chaos Kings (1994) were only produced for television. The planned television series also never came about after the pilot, which was shown on FOX in 1991 , because of its negative reviews.
