Falsework of the Gmündertobel Bridge

Richard Coray (born July 30, 1869 in Trin , Canton of Graubünden ; † October 3, 1946 in Davos Wiesen ) was a Swiss carpenter and scaffolding maker. Its falsework enabled the construction of wide-span concrete bridges. Its solid falsework is considered to be technical and craft masterpieces.

biography

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Trin and Davos , Coray studied at the Technikum Winterthur from 1889 to 1892 . Together with his brother Vincenz and another partner, Coray had a business for timber transport, which initially built cable giants (mountain cable cars for the valley transport of felled tree trunks) in the mountains. You received the first order for a falsework bridge in Versamer Tobel . The project closed in deficit and led to the bankruptcy of the company. After a short stay abroad, Richard Coray continued to work in Switzerland. Between 1898 and 1940 he made a significant contribution to the important bridge building projects in Switzerland.

Works

Coray built a cable car stretched across the valley to bring the components from the abutments to the desired position. For him as a builder of rope giants, this was an obvious solution. While Coray initially only built scaffolding according to the specifications of civil engineers , he designed scaffolding himself for the Langwieser Viaduct for the first time. Together with his sons, a falsework was created for the Salginatobel Bridge in a new type of construction, which he kept from now on. These scaffolding based on the Coray system required a minimum of material and were therefore considered to be very elegant and filigree. For lowering the falsework after the completion of the bridge Coray developed a simple method without sand pots got on or countersunk screws by the specific pieces out of sawed individual pursuit. His son Richard Coray jun. as a young civil engineer calculated the falsework of the Salginatobel Bridge and directed its construction work.

Coray built the falsework for the following bridges, among others:

In addition to these projects, he also took on other projects for financial reasons. He built milk transport cable cars, a ski hut in Nagiens for the SAC ( Swiss Alpine Club ) and secured the leaning tower of St. Moritz together with Robert Maillart. Richard Coray's sons took over his business in the 1930s.
