Riders on the Storm is a 1971 Doors song from the LA Woman album . The piece was composed by John Densmore , Robby Krieger , Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison . The single was released in June 1971, and included on the B-side of the play The Changeling . It reached number 14 on the charts in the USA, number 28 in Germany and number 22 in Great Britain.

History of origin

The song was inspired by (Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend by Stan Jones from 1948. Riders on the Storm contains thunder and rain effects and Ray Manzarek mimicked the rain noises on a Fender Rhodes . Riders on the Storm is based in part on the story of serial killer Billy Cook , who hitchhiked and killed an entire family. Alternatively, the text is traced back to a French surrealist poem from the 1930s, the "Chevaliers de l'Ouragan" (for example, "Riders of the Storm") by Louis Aragon .

Chord Progression of the Song (Score Example 2)

The title is in e- Doric and to 100 in the slow pace of approximately 95 BPM held. For a long time it is characterized by the chord change Em - A - Em or Em7 . In the center of the bass motion, the sound is E . The song achieves its monotonous, hypnotic effect through a dominant bass ostinato E - H - G - H - E - A - C # - A (see sheet music example 1) over these chords, a continuous and light drum beat without a kick drum , the relaxed performed and the Vocal line that does not exceed a small range of the fourth, as well as sparkling interjections and solo runs of the Fender-Rhodes piano. Frequently repeated motifs of the piano in thirds (see note example 2) and sparingly interspersed motifs of the guitar stand out.

After a long change between E minor and A major, the song changes to the subdominant A minor, and then takes up B minor, C major, and D major (however with different basic tones) (sheet music example 2). The other harmonic design of this section is supported by the playing style of bass and drums. The bass leaves its usual ostinato and the drums change from a continuous beat to an emphasis on individual beats.

admission

The song was recorded at the Doors Workshop in December 1970 with the assistance of Bruce Botnick, the longtime sound engineer and co-producer of the recording. The lead voice comes from Jim Morrison, who whispered the text again on the recording to create a haunting effect. Riders on the Storm was the last song the Doors recorded together.

The album version had a playing time of seven minutes and nine seconds, the single was an abridged version with a playing time of four minutes and 35 seconds.
