Robert Haldane Smith, Baron Smith of Kelvin , KT , Kt , CH (born August 8, 1944 in Glasgow , United Kingdom ) is a Scottish businessman and politician who was formerly " Governor " of the British Broadcasting Corporation before the BBC Trust was founded has been.

He is currently Chancellor of the University of the West of Scotland and Chairman of the UK government-backed Green Investment Bank.

biography

Smith went to Allan Glen's School in Glasgow . In 1963 he began a career as an accountant with Robb Ferguson & Company . He qualified as a Chartered Accountant (FCA) in 1968 .

He then worked for the ICFC until 1982 , now 3i , and from 1983 for the Royal Bank of Scotland . From 1985 to 1989 he was Managing Director of Charterhouse Development Capital Ltd. He was also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Grenfell Private Equity , Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management and was Deputy Chairman of its successor organization, Deutsche Asset Management , from 2000–2002 . He has held several positions as Director of MFI Furniture Group , Stakis Hotels, Bank of Scotland , Tip Europe and Network Rail .

Smith was a member of the Financial Services Authority and a member of the Financial Reporting Council from 1997-2000 . He was the former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Museums of Scotland from 1993-2002 . He has also been President of the British Association of Friends of Museums since 1995 and was a member from 1988–1998 and Vice Chairman (“Vice Chairman”) of the Museums and Galleries Commission from 1996–1998 .

Current positions

He is currently Chairman of IMI plc and Scottish and Southern Energy, and is a non-exec director of 3i , Standard Bank Group Limited and Aegon UK . He is also Patron of the Scottish Community Foundation.

On February 8, 2008, he became chairman of the company that organized the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games . He became the first chairman of the UK's Green Investment Bank in May 2012.

Nobility titles, honors and academic appreciation

In 1999 he became a Knight Bachelor for beaten knight . On April 18, 2008 it was announced that Sir Robert Smith would become a Life Peer member of the House of Lords . On May 29, 2008 he was awarded the title of Baron Smith of Kelvin , of Kelvin in the City of Glasgow . He sits in parliament as a crossbencher . In 2014 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the thistle order , he was also Chancellor of this order. In 2016 he was accepted into the Order of the Companions of Honor .

Smith holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Glasgow , Edinburgh and Paisley , where he was Chancellor from 2003. During his tenure, the merger with Bell College in Hamilton took place with the intention of creating the largest university in Scotland. The university changed its name to University of the West of Scotland in November 2007 . In 2010 he received an honorary membership from the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors .

Private life

Lord Smith of Kelvin married Alison Marjorie Bell in 1969. The couple has two daughters.

He owns Inchmarnock Island on the west coast of Bute Island in the Firth of Clyde .
