Robert Hermann August Unger , von Unger since 1880 , (born December 29, 1828 in Durlach , † March 13, 1887 in Spandau ) was a Prussian major general .

He was the son of the businessman Friedrich Unger († 1858) and his wife Karoline, née Wagner († 1835).

Military career

Unger attended the Lyceum and the Polytechnic School in Karlsruhe . On April 1, 1846, he joined the 1st Line Infantry Regiment of the Baden Army as a regimental cadet . Unger took part in the suppression of the Baden Revolution and the campaign in Schleswig-Holstein in 1848 . On April 9, 1850 he joined the 9th Infantry Battalion as a porter ensign , where he was promoted to secondary lieutenant at the end of June 1850 and to battalion adjutant at the beginning of November of the following year. This was followed from October 22, 1852 as adjutant of the 2nd Battalion in the 4th Line Infantry Regiment . In the fall of 1856 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and appointed regimental adjutant. From December 10, 1859 to June 20, 1863 Unger acted as a supervisory officer and teacher at the cadet corps in Karlsruhe. He was then to October 23, 1864 Place Major in Karlsruhe and then with promotion to captain company commander in the 3rd Line Infantry Regiment . In this capacity Unger took part in the battles near Hundheim , Werbach and Gerchsheim in 1866 during the war against Prussia .

In 1870 he and his regiment went to war against France . Unger fought at Wörth and took part in the siege of Strasbourg . This was followed by battles at Champeney, Raon-l'Étape , Etivan, Mariemont, Étuz , St. Valentin, Daix, Nuits, Vellefaux and Villersexel . During the fighting for Belfort in mid-January 1871, he was slightly wounded by a grazing shot in the right hand. Unger was honored with both classes of the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit for his achievements.

On February 3, 1881, he was commissioned to lead the 2nd Hessian Infantry Regiment No. 82 in Göttingen and on May 14, 1881, Unger was appointed regimental commander. In this position he was promoted to colonel on September 7, 1881 . On March 26, 1885, he was transferred to Spandau, where Unger was given command of the 4th Guards Regiment on foot . On September 8, 1885 , Wilhelm I awarded him the Order of the Crown, 2nd class, for his achievements in troop leadership . Due to illness, Unger had to give up his command on December 3, 1886 and was then promoted to major general in the army. He died unmarried in Spandau and was buried in the garrison cemetery there.
