Robert Garcia (* 29. January 1975 in San Pedro , Los Angeles , USA as Roberto García Cortez ) is a retired American boxer in the lightweight , Superfeder- and featherweight and current boxing trainer. He was trained by his father Eduardo García and is the older brother of Mikey Garcia , the WBO world champion in two weight classes .

Garcia is of Mexican origin and a former IBF super featherweight champion.

Amateur career

The left wingman had an extensive amateur career and boxed against Óscar de la Hoya , among others .

Professional career

Garcia was unbeaten when he won the vacant IBF World Championship on March 13, 1998 in super featherweight by a unanimous victory over Harold Warren on points . He defended this belt by a classic knockout in round 5 in October of the same year against Ramon Ledon and lost it in January of the following year by a technical knockout in round 7 to Diego Corrales .

In 2001 Robert Garcia ended his active career.

Coaching career

Robert Garcia is counted among the most experienced boxing coaches worldwide. He initially worked at La Colonia Gym , in Oxnard , California . The Philippine Nonito Donaire is one of the most important boxers he trains . Top boxers such as Marcos Maidana , Nonito Donaire, Robert's younger brother Mikey Garcia, Brandon Rios and Evgeny Gradovich train in the boxing gym in Oxnard, which Donaire co-founded and named after Garcia, the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy .
