Roero (wine)
Roero is an Italian red wine from the Roero region of the same name, northwest of Alba , Cuneo province , Piedmont .
The red wine and the white wine Roero Arneis have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1985 and DOCG status since December 7, 2004 . In 2017, 49,473 hectoliters of DOCG wines (including Roero Arneis) were produced. The red Roero consists almost exclusively of the Nebbiolo grape variety (95–100%) with small additions of red, non-aromatic grapes that are suitable for cultivation in the Piedmont region (0–5%). The wine matures at the manufacturer's premises for at least 20 months before being marketed, of which at least 6 months in wooden barrels; For a Riserva, 32 months in total and 6 months in wooden barrels are the minimum. The sandy soil gives the wine a lighter character than the other Nebbiolo wines in the Langhe, such as Barolo . The Roero and Langhe regions are separated by the Tanaro River .
The approved vineyards are distributed among the municipalities of Castellinaldo , Canale , Corneliano d'Alba , Piobesi d'Alba and Vezza d'Alba as well as parts of the municipalities of Baldissero d'Alba , Castagnito , Guarene , Govone , Magliano Alfieri , Montà , Monteu Roero , Pocapaglia , Priocca , Santa Vittoria d'Alba , Santo Stefano Roero and Sommariva Perno .
