action

Rebecca Bayliss, who has just moved, visits a London antique shop in search of chairs and meets the charming owner Joss Gardner. Back at her place of work, a bookstore, she finds a letter that is already three weeks old, from Otto Peddersen, and contains the message that Rebecca's mother Lisa is seriously ill. At the airport in Ibiza , she learns from Peddersen that her mother has had leukemia for a year , but did not want her to find out . When Rebecca talks about the death of her grandmother, who she never met, her mother says bitterly that nothing escaped her, the atmosphere that prevailed in the house could have overwhelmed you. Although the Boscarva estate in Cornwall was so beautiful, her mother hated it. Her father Grenville withdrew more and more to his studio and painted, and at some point she only wanted to leave it all behind.

Shortly before her mother dies, she makes Rebecca promise to go to Cornwall. So Rebecca goes to Porthkerris, which is associated with some difficulties. Quite surprisingly, she meets Joss Gardner again on the way. He tells her that he is restoring furniture on “Boscarva” and that that is why he is in the area. In a pub, she meets Eliot Bayliss, her cousin, without knowing who he is. Gardner clears them up. When she is on her way to “Boscarva”, she meets Eliot, who takes her with him in his car. Rebecca is given a friendly welcome on the estate. In addition to Eliot's mother Mollie, she also meets a distant relative, the young Andrea, who seems to be bored. Meeting her grandfather Grenville is instructive. He suggests that Molly, and especially Eliot, would hope to enjoy the inheritance soon.

After Rebecca had Joss invite her for coffee in his apartment, the two of them kiss. Shortly afterwards, Rebecca discovers the secretary that belonged to her mother and is already missing on the estate in an unfinished room in Joss' apartment . Rebecca doesn't know what to believe and is completely confused. She tells her grandfather that she wants to go back to her apartment in London first. Her grandfather gives her the key to his studio so that she can choose a picture and take it with her. Finally she comes across a portrait of the mysterious Sophia, which her grandfather has painted over and over again. However, so far only images appeared that showed her with her face turned away.

When Andrea was delivered to the manor in a pitiful state by Morris Petcomp that evening, Andrea said that Joss, with whom she had a date, had become intrusive and hit her when she tried to evade him. Petcomp then beats Joss with an iron bar outside a pub with Eliot's indirect consent, seriously injuring him. When Rebecca finds out about this, she immediately rushes to Joss, who also takes the opportunity to tell her what Andreas's claim and the secretary are really about. Rebecca was angry that he didn't want to go out to eat with her, so he threw her out of his apartment. He bought the secretary from a dealer who bought it from Eliot, who was up to his neck in debt.

When everyone is united on the estate, it becomes clear why there is only one picture that shows Sophia's face, she was the mother of Joss and the portrait reveals the great similarity between mother and son. Grenville always knew that Joss was his grandson, which is why he always held his protective hand over him. He tells his family that Sophia was the only woman he really loved, a very proud and unusual woman, but didn't want him to get a divorce because of her. Eliot reacts bitterly, turns away and says he was last seen. Molly runs after her son. Joss says that Rebecca should go to London with him, there they will pack their things and the day after tomorrow they will be back on “Boscarva”, and now she should finally say “it”. Whereupon they confess their love to each other.
