The highlight of his career was his participation in the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck , even though he narrowly missed winning a medal with his partner Stefan Hölzlwimmer. The duo were ahead in the first run at the first split, but a gross driving mistake threw them back to fifth after the first run. Despite the third-best running time in the second round, it was only enough to finish fourth behind Rinn / Hahn , Brandner / Schwarm and Schmid / Schachner . For this achievement, Rudolf Großwang and his partner Stefan Hölzlwimmer were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf . In the 1977/78 World Cup, the duo achieved a podium finish in January 1978 in Igls in the first season of 1977/78 , and in the overall standings the two finished third.
After the sport
Großwang is still connected to the sport both professionally and on a voluntary basis. From 1988 on, Großeswang ran the Kufenstüberl, which served as a meeting point for athletes and media representatives in the "German House" during the Winter Olympics . He founded an agency for event sponsoring in sport, with which he also took over sponsorship for the FIL , and works as deputy chairman and in the development department of competitive sports at his home club RC Berchtesgaden. His daughter Heike Großeswang has been Secretary General of the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) since 2012 . His son of the same name was also a luge competitor.
