The 500 kilometer long road crosses the entire country in a south-north direction. Starting from Montevideo , it leads through the departments of Montevideo , Canelones , Florida , Durazno , Tacuarembó and Rivera .

Starting as a four-lane road in Montevideo - in some parts it has even been expanded to six lanes - it then forks at a traffic junction into Ruta 1, which runs in a westerly direction, and Ruta 5, which runs northwards. From now on, it passes as a four-lane road Progreso to the town of Canelones, about 40 kilometers away . In the further course - now as a simple but well-signposted road in a well-kept condition - on its way north it passes the cities of Florida , Pintado , Sarandí Grande , Durazno , Paso de los Toros , where it crosses the Río Negro , Chamberlain , Curtina and Tacuarembó to its end point on the Brazilian border at Rivera .
