Ryan Wilson (born February 3, 1987 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with KalPa Kuopio from the Finnish Liiga since November 2017 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Ryan Wilson began his career as a hockey player in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League , in which he was active from 2003 to 2008 for the Toronto St. Michael's Majors and Sarnia Sting . In the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons , the defender was the most successful defender in the league with 75 and 71 points, respectively . After the 2007/08 season was over, Wilson was rewarded with a nomination for the Third All-Star Team .

On July 1, 2008, the defender was awarded a free agent contract with the Calgary Flames without ever having been drafted . For the Calgary farm team , the Quad City Flames from the American Hockey League , he played exclusively in the 2008/09 season before he went to the Colorado Avalanche on March 4, 2009 together with Lawrence Nycholat and a second-round vote in exchange for Jordan Leopold was delivered. In their AHL farm team Lake Erie Monsters , he ended the season. After he had started the 2009/10 season with the Lake Erie Monsters, the Canadian was appointed to the squad of the Colorado Avalanche, for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 15, 2009 in the game with the Montréal Canadiens . After establishing himself in the NHL Avalanche squad, a series of injuries followed, due to which he was only able to play 48 competitive games in the 2012/13 to 2014/15 seasons. After the end of the 2014/15 season, his expiring contract was therefore not extended, so that he joined the Calgary Flames on a trial basis (professional tryout contract) in September 2015 . However, he was not accepted there.

In November 2015, Wilson was signed by Ak Bars Kazan from the Continental Hockey League until the end of the season. He spent a season there before being signed by HC Lugano from the Swiss National League A (NLA) in September 2016 . After the Canadian had not received a follow-up contract there, it took until November 2017 until he found a new employer in KalPa Kuopio from Liiga in Finland . Wilson won the Spengler Cup with the traditional Finnish club at the end of 2018 .
