São Cristóvão , officially Município de São Cristóvão , is a city in northeastern Brazil. It is located in the state of Sergipe , had 78,864 inhabitants at the 2010 census and has an area of ​​around 438 km². The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 90,072 inhabitants, who are called São Cristovensians ( são-cristovenses ). It is located about 26 km southwest of Aracaju , the capital of the state. It has been part of the Aracaju metropolitan area since 1995 .

history

The city was founded in 1590, making it the fourth oldest city in Brazil. It was the capital of Sergipe Province until 1855 , before the new capital Aracaju was founded.

The Praça São Francisco (German Sankt-Franziskus-Platz ) in the middle of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 .
