Historic commercial buildings in the Wilthener Straße business park

The southern suburb , in Upper Sorbian , is a district of Bautzen and is located between the city center in the north and Oberkaina in the south. It has about 1,700 inhabitants and is mostly located in the historical district of Bautzen, with the exception of the railway settlement Am Albrechtsbach (Gem. Strehla ) and a small piece of land along Wilthener Straße (Gem. Oberkaina).
The largest concentration of businesses in Bautzen can be found in the Südvorstadt. This is where the Humboldtstrasse and Wilthener Strasse industrial areas and the southern industrial area are located. There is also a technology and start-up center. The district is therefore largely designated in the development plan as a commercial or mixed area. There are also a few lavishly decorated villas and listed Wilhelminian-style streets.
The Wilthener Straße business park, which is located in historic commercial buildings and adapted new buildings, has been honored several times for its listed management of abandoned industrial sites and for its proximity to the city center and the associated avoidance of urban sprawl. Since the opening of the west bypass in December 2013, the area has also been well connected to the Bautzen-West approach to the A 4 . The site with a land area of 65,500 m² and a rentable area of 35,000 m² was developed from the Bautzen part of the Robur factory in Zittau, which was closed in 1991 . The first tenants moved in in 1993. More than 1200 people are currently employed in around 40 companies in the industrial park, including the Diakoniewerk Oberlausitz and the theater workshops of the German-Sorbian People's Theater in Bautzen.
In the area of the Südvorstadt, as in most of the other parts of the city of Bautzen, traces of an early age were found during excavations. Particularly noteworthy were vessels with spiral ring decorations that are around 2500 years old and for which there are no comparable finds at other excavation sites.
