The Salcahuasi district is located in the Tayacaja Province in the Huancavelica region in southwest central Peru . The district was established on June 18, 1987. It has an area of ​​116 km². The 2017 census counted 2835 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4545, in 2007 it was 3821. The seat of the district administration is the 3150  m high village of Salcahuasi with 275 inhabitants (as of 2017). Salcahuasi is located 35 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Pampas .

Geographical location

The Salcahuasi district is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the northeast of the Tayacaja Province. The district is located on the left bank of the north-flowing Río Mantaro . In the north, the district is bounded by the Río Pariahuanca.

The Salcahuasi district is bordered to the south and the west by the district Salcabamba , in the extreme northwest of the district of San Marcos de Rocchac , on the north by the district Pariahuanca ( province of Huancayo ) and to the east by the district Surcubamba .
