San Onofre is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .

geography

San Onofre is located in the northeast of Sucre , in the sub-region of Morrosquillo , 57 km from Sincelejo , at an altitude of 30 m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 27 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Cartagena and Arjona in the department of Bolívar , in the south on the Gulf of Morrosquillo , Tolú , Tolú Viejo , Colosó and Chalán , in the east on María La Baja and El Carmen de Bolívar in Bolívar and in the west on the Caribbean Sea . The island of Boquerón in the San Bernardo Archipelago is part of the municipality .

history

San Onofre was founded in 1774 by the Spanish captain Antonio de la Torre y Miranda. The region was already populated by runaway slaves at the time. San Onofre has had parish status since 1839.
