The Chiesa di Sant'Angelo a Nilo (German roughly: Church of the Holy Angel of Nilo or on the Nile ) is a small church in the old town of Naples on the Piazzetta Nilo. It is also known as the Cappella Brancaccio and is most famous for the tomb of Cardinal Rinaldo Brancaccio , which was created by Donatello and Michelozzo and is considered one of the most important works of the early Renaissance in Naples.

history

The interior of Sant'Angelo a Nilo

The church was built at the request of Cardinal Rinaldo Brancaccio between 1385 and 1401 next to the palace of the Brancaccio family and consecrated to the Archangel Michael . Its nickname " a Nilo " refers to the square in front of it with the ancient statue of the river god Nile , who was worshiped by the Egyptian traders who once lived here . Around 1535 the building was enlarged and the presbytery and the right front chapel with the tomb of Cardinal Brancaccio were added.

The church owes its present appearance to a renovation carried out in 1709 by the architect Arcangelo Guglielmelli . The nave was raised, the dome was built and the church was given a discreet baroque style with the help of stucco and other decorations .

description

The outer

The baroque façade of the church is characterized by numerous smooth pilasters , in the lower part of gray Piperno made with composite - capitals are ornamented; the upper floor, structured with pilaster strips, corresponds to the Tuscan order . The walls themselves are covered with reddish bricks . There are also elegant, rather restrained stucco ornaments , and putti bearing a coat of arms can be seen above the windows facing the Piazzetta Nilo .

The building has two entrances, which are among the oldest surviving structures. The main portal on Via Mezzocannone is richly carved with figures of Saints Peter , Lawrence and Anthony of Padua on the right and Paul , John the Evangelist and Dominic on the left . Above that on the architrave there are figures of angels and the remains of a fresco from the 15th century showing the Virgin Mary, the Archangel Michael and St. Baculo with Cardinal Brancaccio .

The portal of the side entrance to the Piazzetta Nilo dates from the 15th century. It is adorned with figures of the Archangel Gabriel and Mary (i.e. the Annunciation of Mary ), as well as Saints Michael, John the Baptist , John of the Cross and Agnes . In the lunette above was once the statue of the Archangel Michael with the dragon , which can now be seen inside the church. In two niches are sculptures by Bartolomeo Granucci depicting two favorite saints of the Brancaccio family: Saints Candida d. Ä. and Candida d. J.

Arcangelo Guglielmelli gave the single-aisled, bright interior a classic character with smooth columns and three-quarter columns in composite order (similar to the facade). The architect could possibly have adopted the idea of designing the entire room and the facade with capitals of the composite order from the grave monument of Cardinal Brancaccio (see below). The elegant stucco decor, also designed by Guglielmelli, consists mainly of shells, tondi with busts of saints , winged angel heads over arcades and windows and angel putti on the entablature . The colored marble decorations on the altars and floor are from the 17th and 18th centuries. The historical organ from the 18th century stands in a richly carved gold-plated case on the gallery above the entrance .

Among the paintings, a representation of the saint in adoration of the Holy Face by Giovanbattista Lama stands out, on the same altar a Maria Addolorata from the end of the 17th century.

In the first chapel on the right are the relics of St. Candida from the 6th century and a painting by Carlo Sellitto from 1641 with the apparition of the Madonna to St. Candida (also: Vision of St. Candida ). Also worth mentioning is a pietà from the school of Jusepe de Ribera .

The main altar was also revised under Guglielmelli and is dominated by the altarpiece with the Archangel Michael , a masterpiece of Mannerism by Marco dal Pino (1573). The tabernacle on the right (next to the sacristy ) is attributed to Giovan Tommaso Malvito ; to the left of the main altar are the tombs of the cardinals Stefano and Francesco Brancaccio, created by the brothers Bartolomeo and Pietro Ghetti from Carrara .

Tomb of Rinaldo Brancaccio

Tomb of Cardinal Brancaccio by Donatello, Michelozzo and helpers (1426–28)

The tomb of Cardinal Brancaccio on the right was created between 1426 and 1428. It is an important and extraordinary work of the early Renaissance with late Gothic reminiscences and was created in collaboration with Donatello and Michelozzo. It consists of partially gilded and colored white marble and measures 11.60 m in height and 4.60 m in depth. It was completed in June 1427, while the cardinal was still alive, and then brought from Pisa by sea to Naples in 1428 . The architectural framework is formed by two fluted columns of the composite order , which support a canopy with a semicircular arch. In the semi-Gothic crown above is a tondo with a relief with Christ as Savior , on both sides two small angel putti with trumpets. The sarcophagus itself is carried by three allegorical figures and is adorned with a relief by Donatello depicting the Assumption of Mary . The figure of the deceased above is surmounted by two monk-like angels, above in a semicircular bas-relief a Madonna and Child, Saint John the Elder. Baptist and the Archangel Michael .
