The Santiago de Quirahuara district is located in the Huaytará province in the Huancavelica region in south- central Peru . The district was established on January 26, 1956. It has an area of ​​175 km². The 2017 census counted 396 residents. In 1993 the population was 707, in 2007 it was 698. The district administration is located in the 2802  m high town of Santiago de Quirahuara with 231 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santiago de Quirahuara is located 65 km southeast of the provincial capital Huaytará .

Geographical location

The district of Santiago de Quirahuara is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the extreme southeast of the Huaytará province. The longitudinal extension in east-west direction is almost 28 km, the maximum width is about 6.5 km. In the east of the district is the headwaters of the Río Grande (in the upper reaches also Río Condorchaca). The Río Grande flows to the northwest, leaves the district area and later forms its western border flowing south. The Río Lamary, a left tributary of the Río Grande, drains the western part of the district to the west.

The district of Santiago de Quirahuara borders in the west and in the west north with the district Ocoyo , in the east north with the district Querco , in the east with the district Sancos ( province Huanca Sancos ) and in the south with the districts Llauta and Huac-Huas (both in the province of Lucanas ).
