action
Johnny Liston has served twelve tough years in prison for a murder he did not commit. As soon as he is released and on his way home, he is ambushed. He survived because he pretends to be dead and can surprise the bandits by looting his "corpse". Johnny learns that his brother Sartana married the girl he was with himself. When he meets his mother, who liked his brother more and more and who has become addicted to alcohol, he realizes the tragic extent of the story: the village is being tyrannized by his brother, who is obsessed with power and selfishly collects protection money from the citizens and who, with his gang, become more depraved Form tyrannized. With Jerry, a mute, and Joselita, the daughter of the one allegedly murdered by him, Johnny finds two allies who want to take action against his brother's reign of terror. Joselita also knows that Sartana was the actual murderer and unscrupulously handed over his brother. When Sartana realizes that he has opponents, he finally goes crazy and wants to kill his brother Johnny. He is unsuccessful; Johnny can turn him off.
Reviews
"A spaghetti western with an almost fascist disposition, whose meager plot must serve as a fig leaf for repulsive brutalities."
“This Cain-Abel constellation is produced by the actors with almost hysterical devotion. (...) Not a masterpiece, that's clear, but a bulky stranger in the night can also delight ... "
"Very entertaining tragedy wester by Alberto Cardone, with an 'evil' Gianni Garko reminiscent of Klaus Kinski."
Heyne-Filmlexikon (1995): “Western-Dutzendware.” The Protestant film observer comes up with both praise and criticism : “A brilliantly photographed sadist film [...] without a consistent fable, but with pseudo-religious motifs. Not advised. "
Others
- The film had to be cut significantly for its theatrical release in Germany because of the violent scenes it contained - to 92 minutes - but it was a great commercial success. He made the actor Gianni Garko known, who later slipped into the role of Sartana four times, but which was heavily redesigned and no longer bears any resemblance to the role in this film, which is why he is not counted in the Sartana series that began in 1968 .
- The film song "Necklace of Pearls" is interpreted by Peter Boom .
- The film was released in abridged form on DVD by MCP on August 6, 2010. On May 23, 2014, a complete version of X-Cess was published, as was Koch Media on August 14, as part of the Spaghetti Western Encyclopedia No.3 .
