The Altmühltaler Mineralbrunnen GmbH & Co. KG (formerly Schäff or Schaeff ) is a German group of companies of the beverage industry based in Treuchtlingen , a town in Middle Franconia district Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen .

history

The origin of the group is a Treuchtlinger brewery founded in 1364 . The brewery later went to the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach . In 1664 they introduced compulsory beer: all restaurants had to get their beer from this margravial brewery. In 1792 the margraviate passed into Prussian ownership and with it the brewery. The beer requirement was lifted and the brewery was sold in 1797 to the private citizen Johann Georg Feldner. The brewery remained in the possession of his family until 1897, which was now called Huss through marriage. After a sale, the company traded as Schäffbräu. In 1979 Schäffbräu acquired the north wing of the Treuchtlingen city palace , renovated it in 1984/85 and built a new west wing, into which a spa hotel and its own thermal spring moved.

In 1994 a new well was drilled in Baruth (in the Mark Brandenburg south of Berlin ) (commissioning 1995) and a bottling plant was built in which mainly mineral water and carbonated soft drinks are produced. Initially, one-way glass bottles were filled, and from the beginning of 2000 the five filling lines were gradually converted to PET bottles . In 2005 beer production was given up.

The mineral water and soft drinks manufacturer Rickertsen from Reinbek near Hamburg was sold to May-Werke in Erftstadt - Köttingen in 1998 .

Controversy

In 1978, senior partner Friedrich Schäff was convicted of pounding beer with dye. In 1983 he mixed monobromoacetic acid into sour beer to keep it from completely overturning, and was fined 45,000 DM for this renewed violation by the Weißenburg District Court. The association for the promotion of medium-sized private breweries then excluded the then Schäff-Bräu GmbH & Co. KG in 1985 .

Due to increased radioactive pollution, the mineral water from the Riedbach spring, which belongs to the Schäff Group, was noticed by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in 2006 with a measured value of 539 micro Sv . The precautionary value for infants is 100 mikroSv. However, the dose value for adults was not exceeded.

In 2008 the Stiftung Warentest criticized the high acetaldehyde content (30.5 μg / l) in the waters of Baruther Johannesbrunnen and Brandenburger Urstromquelle (the self- imposed limit value for the mineral water industry is 10 μg / l).

In July 2008 the Schäff company Altmühltaler Mineralbrunnen GmbH had to recall Altmühltaler - Stilles Mineralwasser brand water due to the high level of germs .

The group is controversial because of its hindrance to trade union activities and the undermining of collective agreements through the intensive use of temporary workers. Specialists previously trained in the company, such as mechatronics technicians , warehouse logisticians , food technicians , etc., are dismissed after successfully completing their training and are newly hired in the company's own recruitment agency, BUQ Personnel.

On January 1, 2017, Altmühltaler took over the Flämingquelle in Wiesenburg from Christinenbrunnen, only to close it shortly afterwards with 30 employees. The employees signed an agreement with the new owner on January 4, 2017 and waived their claims. A day later the managing director announced the end of production. It is examined to what extent there are intentions of fraud, which could then also have criminal relevance.
