Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland

The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 1876 in London founded and, in addition Mineralogy areas crystallography , geochemistry , petrology , environmental geology and economic geology. The seat is in Twickenham .

Before that there was only a brief British Mineralogical Society (until 1806), after which the mineralogists were represented in the Geological Society of London . Finally, the lecturer in mining and mineralogy in Cornwall Joseph Henry Collins (1841-1916) made another attempt, which led to the establishment of the company. First President was Henry Clifton Sorby and Secretary Collins.

They publish Mineralogical Magazine and have a member magazine, Elements . They also publish the magazine Clay Minerals , with the European Mineralogical Union the EMU Notes in Mineralogy and books in several book series.

They have been presenting the Schlumberger Award since 1990 . There are also honorary memberships.
