history

The area of Shovte became famous through the victory of the Zaporozhian Cossacks under Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj over the Polish-Lithuanian troops in the battle of Shovti Vody at the beginning of the Khmelnitsky uprising on May 16, 1648.

According to documents from 1680, there was a first farm on the banks of the Shovta, founded by Zaporozhian Cossacks, in the middle of the 17th century, from which the later village of Shovte emerged. By 1740 several farms with more than 200 inhabitants had been built on the Schowta, who lived from agriculture and cattle breeding.

In the years 1754 to 1759 and from 1761 to 1764 Shovte belonged to the territory of the Novoslobidskyj Cossack Regiment, an administrative-territorial and military unit in Ukraine.

Later the village was part of the Verkhnodniprovskyj county and became the center of the Shovtjanska parish. An Orthodox church has existed in the village since 1778. In 1886 there were 762 households in the village with 2920 people, a school and two inns. Twice a year there was a fair and a Sunday market in the village. The largest number of inhabitants reached the village in 1921 with 8,503 inhabitants, who were distributed over 1687 households. On August 13, 1941, the village was occupied by Wehrmacht troops and liberated by Red Army troops on October 13, 1943 .
