History and infrastructure

The earliest written document is from 1262 and is "Swant". It is based on Middle High German swant (clearing).

In the 1820s, the Schwant tax community was created ( Lagebuch from 1787/88), at that time it belonged to the Waldenfels district commissioner as one of six communities . After the revolution of 1848/49 and the abolition of the manorial rule , it also became a (political) local community . In 1875 the communities of Waldburg and Schwant merged. In 1938, at the time of the Anschluss , when large municipalities were created everywhere in Austria, the municipality of Freistadt was enlarged in the south and southwest, which also brought the southeastern districts of St. Peter to the city.

From 1830–32 the horse-drawn railway Budweis (České Budějovice) - Linz was built along the Jaunitz, here was the turnout 11, middle station Oberschwand . The Summerauer Bahn has been running here since 1873, but today it has no stopping point: Freistadt station is just south of the cadastral border.

In 1912 the Schwandt volunteer fire brigade was founded (today Schwandt-Freudenthal).

The old Leonfelden – Freistädter Bezirksstraße , which crosses the area in the south, was the B 128 Sternwald Straße from 1932 and is now the B 38  Böhmerwald Straße .
