Sebastián Herrero Espinosa de los Monteros CO (born January 20, 1822 in Jerez de la Frontera , † December 9, 1903 in Valencia ) was a Spanish clergyman, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Valencia and cardinal .

Life

The son of a noble family, descended on his mother's side from the Marquis de Monte Olivar, studied humanities and philosophy . At the time when he decided to study law at the University of Seville , from which he graduated with a doctorate in law , he was known as a poet and writer and worked in the newspapers of his time. He wrote García el Calumniador and El Conde Fernán González , among others . When he was working as a lawyer in Morón de la Frontera , he decided in 1856 to become a priest . In 1856 he entered the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Seville and was ordained a priest in 1860 . From 1861 he was rector of the Cadiz seminary. He was vicar general of the diocese of Cádiz y Ceuta and cathedral dean of the cathedral chapter .

On September 17, 1875, he was elected Bishop of Cuenca . Pope Pius IX confirmed this on November 30, 1875. The episcopal ordination donated to him the bishop of Cádiz y Ceuta , Félix María Arrieta y Llano OFMCap , on November 30 of the same year; Co- consecrators were John Baptist Scandella , Vicar Apostolic of Gibraltar , and Vicente Calvo y Valero , Bishop of Santander .

On December 18, 1876, he was elected Bishop of Vitoria . He announced his resignation in June 1880 due to health problems and moved to Sanlúcar de Barrameda . On March 27, 1882, he was elected Bishop of Oviedo until he was elected Bishop of Córdoba on March 15, 1883 . He published a collection of sacred poetry that he gave Pope Leo XIII. dedicated. From 1888 he was senator of the Kingdom of Spain.

On March 24, 1898, he was appointed Archbishop of Valencia . Leo XIII. took him on June 22, 1903 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and he received on August 27 of the same year the titular church Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio . He participated in the papal conclave, 1903 , Pope Pius X chose part.

He was buried in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Valencia Cathedral.
