See Siang Wong ( Chinese : 黃旭 洋, pinyin : huáng xù yáng; born May 7, 1979 in Arnhem ) is a Swiss pianist of Chinese descent.

Life

See Siang Wong is the son of Chinese parents who were born in Singapore and Malaysia . He studied with Marjès Benoist in the Netherlands and with the pianists Homero Francesch and Bruno Canino in Switzerland . At the age of twelve he made his concert debut, accompanied by the Dutch Radio Orchestra .

See Siang Wong has performed in over 30 countries in Europe, Asia, America, the Middle East and Australia. He gave concerts with well-known conductors such as Pierre Boulez ( Webern Concerto , Berio O King , Boulez Dérive I as part of the Lucerne Festival ), Ralf Weikert (Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 KV 488), Howard Griffiths (Mozart Piano Concerto No. 12 KV 414) . Highlights were the performances in Amsterdam ( Concertgebouw ), London ( St. Martin in the Fields ), Zurich ( Tonhalle ), Lucerne ( KKL ), Paris (Salle Olivier Messiaen), Helsinki ( Aino Ackté ), Budapest (Marble Hall), Prague ( Villa Bertramka ), St. Petersburg ( Philharmonic ) and Bogotá (Luis Ángel Arango).

In addition to the classical repertoire with a focus on Mozart , Chopin , Schumann and Debussy , See Siang Wong is primarily committed to new music . In his concerts he plays piano works by contemporary composers such as Arnold Schönberg , Luciano Berio , György Ligeti , György Kurtág , Wolfgang Rihm , Péter Eötvös , Emmanuel Nunes , Marco Stroppa , James Dillon and Jonathan Harvey . He initiated the Swiss Piano project in 2008 and presents new Swiss piano works dedicated to See Siang Wong. The project aims to promote the creation of new Swiss piano music. Many well-known and young Swiss composers have already written for the project (including Daniel Fueter , Hans Ulrich Lehmann , Laurent Mettraux , Isabel Mundry , Rolf Urs Ringger , Jürg Wyttenbach , Gérard Zinsstag , Alfred Zimmerlin ).

At Decca Records ( Universal ) previously appeared six CDs with piano works by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Haydn, Mozart and Schumann. In 2012 his first album was released on Red Seal ( Sony Music ) with piano works by Franz Schubert , for which he received the “Golden Label Award” from the Belgian record review. The Chopin, Mozart and Schumann recordings and the Schumann / Beethoven CD (Novalis) were recognized as a “classic highlight” by Swiss radio. Further recordings have been made by Deutsche Grammophon and various independent labels. In 2016, “Cinema Classics” (Sony Classical) was number 1 in the English Classical Charts and his two albums “Piano Movie Lounge” became bestsellers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Wong has been teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2002 . He is regularly invited to take part in competitions as a juror. a. 2012 to the Géza Anda competition (SRF Radio Juror), 2014 to the Marguerite Meister competition, 2015 to the Edwin Fischer competition. He gives master classes at home and abroad and belongs to the circle of Steinway & Sons artists.

In addition to his music career, See Siang Wong is also active as a cook and food blogger. In 2018 he became the winner of the Swiss TV cooking show Men's Kitchen , one of the most popular cooking programs in Switzerland.
