Semur (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Semur was a noble Burgundian family from the High Middle Ages .

history

The noble family came from Semur-en-Brionnais and appeared for the first time in the middle of the 10th century. It gained greater importance at the beginning of the 11th century through the marriage between Geoffroy I. de Semur and Mahaut de Chalon, the widow of Henry the Great , Duke of Burgundy , who saw the marriage between the couple's children from their previous marriages, Damas I. de Semur and Aremburga followed. Although Aremburga was the Duke's only child, the Semur did not inherit the title, as King Robert II , Henry's nephew, took over the duchy. Instead, the Semur received the county of Chalon-sur-Saône from Mahaut's legacy , which was lost again in 1078/80 due to the lack of male descendants, as well as the Donzy lordship , which became eponymous for subsequent generations.

Just like the Burgundian marriage, the connection between Hervé IV. De Donzy and Mahaut de Courtenay (1199), heiress of the counties of Nevers , Auxerre and Tonnerre, brought nothing to the family, as no sons were born from this marriage.

The most important family member, however, is Hugo the Holy († 1109), 1049 6th Abbot of Cluny .

The oldest line, the Semur line, died out in the main tribe in the middle of the 13th century; a branch line is the house of Damas-en-Forez , which received the title of Duke of Damas-Crux in 1816 and went out in 1846. The second line, the Donzy line, died out in the main strain in 1225; here, however, there was probably a branch line, the descendants of Savaric de Semur, an uncle of Geoffroy III. de Donzy (who can also be a maternal uncle), from whom the Vergy family descended, which died out in 1630 as the owner of the County of Champlitte . Finally, the youngest line was that of the Counts of Chalon, which died out in 1227.
