Shakespeare for beginners is a British comedy film from the year 2016 .

action

Sir Michael Gifford is a stage actor who has made a name for himself primarily as a Shakespeare actor. He is now sick with Parkinson's and is incontinent. His daughter Sophia and a former lover, Milly, take care of him. But none of the women get along well with the self-centered old man, who is prone to outbursts of anger, pours over himself in self-pity and is simply insufferable. The young Hungarian Dorottya, who wants to become an actress and would like to be tutored by Sir Michael, takes care of him lovingly and sensitively. Thanks to their open, direct manner and their mutual love for Shakespeare, they have a connection to each other.

When Sir Michael is about to be honored for his life's work by the Great Britain Critcs' Guild , he is preparing for the award ceremony. He recites texts from memory from Shakespeare's King Lear , who was treated badly by his two eldest daughters, and who now ponders life, dying and death. The “dress rehearsal” is an appearance in the old people's home, in which he plays a scene from King Lear with Dorottya as his youngest daughter Cordelia and moves the elderly audience to tears.

Sophia, who does not trust him, considers him unpredictable and embarrassing, wants to prevent his appearance at the award ceremony and accept the award in his place. When Dorottya encourages him to pick up the prize himself, Sophia dismisses her. Sir Michael is outraged, he rages and creates air in his rage with the words of the deeply injured Lear, suffers a heart attack and is admitted to the hospital. But he gets back on his feet pretty quickly. When his daughter wants to accept the award in his place, he himself appears on stage in high spirits, thanks her, then sends her away and makes a macabre, brilliant performance.

criticism

The German Press Agency describes the film, in an article printed on Focus Online, as a "charming and sometimes heartbreaking drama", which Shakespeare fans would also get their money's worth. She praises the lightness and humor of the film, the "great dialogues full of puns" and above all the performance of the two main actors, who skillfully passed the balls.

Thorleiv Nicolai Klein rated the comedy with 8 out of 10 possible points on Film-rezensions.de and called it "a tangible drama that captures the friendship of two people and their love for the theater with flying colors thanks to its authentic nature and heartwarming story."
