Sicko ( English for “mentally disturbed” or “crazy”) is a song by the German DJ Felix Jaehn that was created in collaboration with the American rapper Gashi and the Canadian singer-songwriter Faangs .

Creation and artwork

Sicko was created by the three performers themselves - Faangs and Gashi under their real names "Labinot Larry Gashi" and "Melissa Storwick" respectively - together with co-authors James Bell, Vincent Kottkamp and the producer quartet Hitimpulse (consisting of: Jeremy Chacon, Jonas Kalisch, Henrik Meinke and Alexsej Vlasenko). The production was carried out by the Hitimpulse, Jaehn and Kottkamp production team. The piece was mixed, mastered and programmed under the direction of the Austrian sound engineer Nikodem Milewski . The instrumentation was done by Jaehn (drums and synthesizer), Kalisch (drums), Kottkamp (bass guitar), Meinke (synth pads) and Vlasenko (synthesizer).

Only the artist names and the song title can be seen on the front cover of the single. The inscription is in white letters, centered, on an orange background, in the middle of the cover image.

Publication and promotion

The first release of Sicko took place as download and streaming on March 13, 2020. The release was made as a single track by the record label Virgin Records , the product was distributed by Universal Music Publishing . The song was published by Duende Songs Musikverlag, Kookie Diamond and Sony / ATV Music Publishing . On the day of publication, a remix version made by Jaehn himself was released as a single track. On June 12, 2020, a remix version by the Austrian DJ Toby Romeo was released, also as a single track for download and streaming.

content

The lyrics to Sicko are in English . The title translated into German means something like "mentally disturbed" or "crazy". The music and the text were written or composed jointly by James Bell, Faangs, Gashi, Hitimpulse , Felix Jaehn and Vincent Kottkamp. Musically, the song moves in the area of dance pop , with borrowings from the Afrobeat and the Urban. The tempo is 125 beats per minute . The key is E minor . In terms of content, "Sicko" describes a person who mentally repeatedly reaches his limits and is characterized by negative, sometimes disturbing thoughts. Many artists who are constantly on tour and repeatedly encounter emotional ups and downs would experience such states of mind. Jaehn said in an interview that he thinks everyone has a "sicko" in them. We all have dark traits that pop up every now and then. For a while these had gotten the better of him and controlled his life.

The song is based on an intro , two verses and a chorus . The song begins with the intro sung by Faangs, which is directly followed by the first verse, which Faangs interprets in a kind of rap. The first verse is followed by the refrain sung by Gashi. The second stanza follows the chorus, which is also sung by Gashi. After the second chorus, the song ends again with the chorus, which this time Faangs and Gashi interpret together. Jaehn is only involved in the piece as a producer, the main vocals were completely taken over by Faangs and Gashi.

“I'll be like, 'I'm a sicko.
No, you don't know who you're playing.
Overdose, you can't take me on a daily, daily.
Yeah, baby, I'm a sicko, ha-ah. '”

- Refrain, original excerpt

“I will say, 'I am a deranged person.
No, you have no idea who you are playing with.
Overdose, you can't take me every day, every day.
Yes, darling, I'm a deranged, ha-ah. '"

- Refrain, translation

Music videos

To Sicko two official music videos were released. First, a poetry video was released that premiered on March 21, 2020 on YouTube . In the foreground, as is typical for poetry videos, it always shows the currently sung song lines in white letters. Blurred people can be seen in the orange-red background. The actual music video finally celebrated its premiere on April 8, 2020. It begins with Jaehn, in which the camera slowly approaches until he closes his eyes. Then you see the three performers during a boisterous celebration in a villa. The total length of the video is 2:36 minutes. Both music videos have almost a million views on YouTube (as of May 2020).

Reviews

Jannik Pesenacker from the German-language internet presence dance-charts.de described Sicko as being relatively short, but of a high quality, successful “dance-pop crossover”. The piece is "clearly" darker than the usual productions by Jaehn, with which Jaehn deviated "clearly" from his usual style. Faang's vocals harmonize “first class” with Gashi interpretations. Especially in the chorus, the common singing creates a "great" atmosphere. Sicko is characterized by a "great" instrumental, which would come into its own towards the end of the song without singing and in the rest of the single the voices of both performers would be "perfectly" underlaid. With Faag and Gashi, Jaehn brought in the right singers. He did "first-class" work in producing and the chants were "surprisingly profound". Even if Jaehn had indicated that songs like Sicko would remain an exception, Pesenacker would be happy about more such publications.
