I ( English for "I") is the debut album by German DJ Felix Jaehn .

Creation and artwork

With three exceptions, all the pieces on the album were written by Felix Jaehn, in collaboration with changing co-authors. In most cases, the co-authors only appear in isolated works. Most of the tracks were created in collaboration with the Luxembourg musician Christophe Vitorino De Almeida (Chris Meid), who co-wrote three tracks on the album. Furthermore, the songwriters and composers Tim Deal (Hight), Michael Geldreich, Mack, Aiko Rohd and Tonino Speciale each make two author participations. In addition to the author mentioned, a further 69 songwriters and composers are working on one piece each. With two exceptions, all titles were produced by Jaehn. Sometimes he did the productions alone and sometimes in collaboration with other music producers. De Almeida and the German producer quartet Hitimpulse (consisting of: Jeremy Chacon, Jonas Kalisch, Henrik Meinke and Alexsej Vlasenko) are involved in two productions, making them the only producers involved in more than one production. Jaehn did not produce the album in a fixed location, including pieces in Copenhagen , London or Los Angeles , on the laptop at various airports - and also in Felix's recently completed studio in his home village on the Baltic Sea . I was released under the L'Agentur, Universal Music, and Virgin Records labels .

On the cover of the album - next to the artist name and song title - you can see a pink stripe and Jaehn's face. The pink stripe is arranged in the middle and runs vertically against a white background through the middle of the cover image. At the bottom, the album title and artist name are embedded in white letters. Jaehns itself is also arranged in the middle. It is the same portrait as the one that can be seen on the single Cool . The only difference is that it is shown larger and in the middle while on the single it is smaller and arranged in the lower left corner. The same artwork concept can not only be found on this or the cover of Cool , but also on several other single releases. The photography by Jaehn comes from Jens Koch. There is a twelve-page booklet inside the CD.

Publication and promotion

I was first published on February 16, 2018 as a CD and download. The album consists of 25 studio recordings, including a cover version and three remixes. An alternative download version of the album contains only 22 tracks and has been shortened by the three pieces Eagle Eyes (Radio Edit) , Photograph (Felix Jaehn Remix) and Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) . The digital versions of I also include a 24-minute video about Jaehn himself. On June 2, 2018, I Remixed, a remix version of the debut album, was released.

A week before the release of I , Jaehn organized a “pre-listening party” in Hamburg in collaboration with the German radio station N-Joy , where Jaehn and Jens Hardeland presented all the titles. Shortly after the publication of I , Zeit magazine published an interview with Jaehn in which he came out as bisexual , among other things . With the appearance of the interview, the media rushed to this news, so that the music faded into the background. In order to further promote the album, talkshows followed, among other things, on the NDR talk show of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk and at Markus Lanz on ZDF . In April 2018 Jaehn completed a four-day tour in Germany, which took place under the name "I Tour 2018".

background information

Jaehn wanted to show with his debut album that he can not only act as a producer, but also as a songwriter. He himself made the following statement about this album: “Of course I haven't made a singer-songwriter album that describes my life from beginning to end. But the songs still carry my signature in a variety of ways and tell of my travels in recent years. There are electronic and hard-produced tracks for the club, but also slower and more melancholy songs that you can just let your mind wander to on the go. "

He always wanted to release an album to give people the opportunity to discover him holistically and to take the fans into his world. The work on the album stretched over three and a half years. He started production shortly after the release of Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) . He produced, created playlists and worried about the order of the tracks, but the album's production was delayed due to the great singles successes. In an interview Jaehn explained the delay as follows: “Maybe from a marketing point of view it would have been smarter to release the album two years ago. But that would have made no artistic sense to me. I've had such incredible success in such a short space of time, but I wasn't ready to produce a full album yet. First of all, I had to develop myself, find my sound, form a team around me, play live, give first interviews. A totally exciting phase that was very important to me. "

content

Most of the lyrics on the album are in English and, with three exceptions, were all written by Jaehn himself, in collaboration with changing co-authors. Only the two titles everyone for everyone and voice are written in German. Musically, the songs are mostly in the area of dance pop .

The regular album consists of 25 tracks, of which 21 are new compositions. Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) is a cover version of the original by the American funk band Rufus and Chaka Khan from 1983. The other three tracks Cloud 9 (Felix Jaehn Remix) (Aden x Olson), Photograph (Felix Jaehn Remix) ( Ed Sheeran ) and Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) ( Omi ) are remix versions of the previously published originals.

Felix Jaehn himself only works as an instrumentalist and producer on all pieces. He can only be heard singing in the background in a few exceptions, otherwise the songs are interpreted by the guest singers. Jaehn chooses these according to his personal taste in music. A voice must touch him. If she does that, he trusts that she would hopefully trigger these emotions in many other people as well. Tim Schou, the front man of the Danish indie band A Friend in London , can be heard as a guest singer in Millionaire and is officially listed. He can also be heard as a singer in Like a Riddle and Feel Good , but is not mentioned as an official guest singer.

Single releases

Single releases

The first single from the album was released three years before I was released . So far, eleven songs on the album have appeared as independent singles. Furthermore, Photograph (Felix Jaehn Remix) and Cloud 9 (Felix Jaehn Remix) were released as singles. However, these are new editions or remixes of the regular versions, the sales of which are added to the original and are therefore not listed as independent singles.

Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) was released as the first single . The single was first released on May 19, 2014. The last single so far, Cool, was released on February 9, 2018. With Voice and Everyone for Everyone , two German-language singles were released.

Of the eleven single releases, ten reached the official German single charts . Nine singles hit the charts in Austria, seven in Switzerland, two in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. The only single that didn't make it to the chart is Eagle Eyes . In Germany, five singles made it into the top 10 , as well as four in Austria, two each in Switzerland and the United Kingdom and one in the USA. With Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) , Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) and voice , three singles made it to the top in Germany. In Austria, two singles reached the top of the charts with Cheerleader and Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) . Cheerleaders became the world's number one success, including in all five countries listed. In the United States, cheerleading is only the sixth number one success by a German artist . It was the first time since 1989 ( Blame It on the Rain by Milli Vanilli ) that a German had topped the Billboard Hot 100 . In addition to the regular singles, the song Jennie made it into the German single charts on June 22, 2018 - due to high downloads.

The best-selling single on the album is Cheerleader , which has sold over 8.3 million copies worldwide to date. Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) was also able to sell over a million copies . In total, all single releases have sold over eleven million copies so far and have received over 89 recordings (10 × gold / 78 × platinum / 1 × diamond).

Reviews

Eddy Decembrino from the German-language online magazine laut.de rated the album with 2/5 stars. For technical reasons, it is understandable that past sales successes should be put on the album again. However, Decembrino wonders whether this really has to be. It could have been interesting to see a more compact album, perhaps only ten tracks strong, with “more experimental sounds” and an even stronger focus on “songwriting”. I, on the other hand, feel like the “best of”. It is “of course” well produced, but overall “few surprises”. Good for radio and business, light pop and shallow dance, but just too many tracks for a successful debut.

The German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated I with 4/10 points. Felix Heinecker from the online editorial team is of the opinion that the album doesn't have much "exciting" to tell. Jaehn also relies on boiling a tried and tested EDM formula. Quiet verse, tension build-up in the bridge until the bang and a relaxed, semi-instrumental refrain . The competence in this field cannot be denied. The feeling for melody is there, as well as for the rhythm to "rock along". Especially when soul comes into the mix like in the “opener” Cool or with Don't Say Love , which is almost like Disclosure , it would be “really good”. How he got the photographer remix moving is not original, but thanks to the great "bridge harmony" it is effective. It is similar with the Eff project with Mark Forster , whose “voice” is used better here than with his own “stuff”. That'll put you in the mood for a few songs. Only I have a whopping 25 of them. According to Jaehn, the first 15 should be the actual "album statement", as guests there would be Gucci Mane and around 20 people whom you have never heard of. The rest is a collection of the previous singles. That means that one would not be spared the "terrible football break" every for every shortly before the end. It is already noticeable when Cut the Cord is available here in a version with the little addition “(Acoustic)”. It is not completely currentless, the beats continue to come from the laptop. Thanks to the successful melody, it sounds nice and is a change. In the midst of all this unbelievably "competent, cuddly, but also quite neutral music", which was probably blown up to 77 minutes thanks to cleverly recognized streaming advantages. Heinecker highlighted cheerleaders (Felix Jaehn Remix) , Cool , Cut the Cord (Acoustic) , Don't Say Love and Photograph (Felix Jaehn Remix) as “highlights” .

Charts and chart placements

I reached position five in the album charts in Germany and stayed in the top 10 for two weeks and 15 weeks in the charts. In Austria the album reached position 26 in one chart week and also position 26 in Switzerland in two chart weeks. After the Felix Jaehn EP missed a chart entry, this is Jaehn's first chart success in the album charts of all three countries. Furthermore, the album was able to place itself for several days or weeks in the iTunes daily evaluations in Brazil (highest ranking: 35), Germany (highest ranking: 2) and Spain (highest ranking: 19).
