content

The lyrics to Cool are in English. Literally translated into German, the title means something like "cool". However, the song deals with the slang meaning "serene or casual". The music and lyrics were written jointly by Radric Davis (Gucci Mane), Scott Harris, Felix Jaehn, Jonas Jeberg, Rick Markowitz and Micah Premnath. Musically, the song moves in the realm of house and rap . The tempo is 95 beats per minute . In terms of content, Cool tells of an acquaintance or friendship that has had its best days. The reason lies in the fact that one person feels called to do better on a soaring basis and ignores the other because he believes he no longer needs it. The message is that it doesn't matter who you are, how you look or what you wear, as long as you are authentic. As soon as you pretend to be someone else, you are no longer "cool".

The piece consists of three stanzas and a refrain . It begins with the first verse, followed by the chorus for the first time. Both the verse and the chorus are interpreted by Marc E. Bassy. The same process is repeated with the second stanza. The third verse is rapped by Gucci Mane before the song ends with another chorus. Cool is mainly interpreted by Marc E. Bassy and Gucci Mane. Jaehn can only be heard as a DJ or instrumentalist. In addition to Jaehn, you can also hear Michael Geldreich (keyboard), Gero Hensel (trumpet) and Peter Klohmann (saxophone) on the other instruments.

"And now you're not who you used to be.
I don't know what you're dying to prove.
So hit me up when you're over being cool.

Your new friends will say anything.
But if you want to know the truth.
Hit me up when you're over being cool. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“And now you're not who you were anymore.
I don't know what you're trying to prove
So find me when you're relaxed again.

Your new friends will say something.
But if you want to know the truth.
Look for me when you are relaxed again. "

- Refrain, translation

Music video

The music video for Cool was filmed in Los Angeles in mid-January 2018 and premiered on February 9, 2018 on YouTube . Before the start of the actual song, an intro by Jaehn can be heard in the music video , which cannot be found on the album or the single. This includes a short expression of opinion from Jaehn, the content of which fits the topic of Cool . He makes the following statement: “It's so important to be authentic and just be true to yourself. It doesn't matter who you are, how you look, or what clothes you wear, as long as you are authentic. The moment you are acting, and trying to be somebody else, is when you really aren't cool. "( English for example," It's so important to be authentic and just be yourself; to be true to yourself. It doesn't matter who you are how you look or what clothes you wear, as long as you are authentic. As soon as you pretend to be someone else, you are no longer cool. "). The music video itself mainly shows Marc E. Bassy and Felix Jaehn hanging out with their friends in and outside of a typical American suburban house. In between, young, sporty people who were filmed in a kind of home video can be seen again and again . To strengthen his authenticity, Jaehn shaves his hair himself at the beginning of the video. Actually, an actor was planned for this scene, but after talking to the director, Jaehn made the decision that he wanted to do it himself. Gucci Mane does not appear in the video. The total length of the video is 3:44 minutes. Directed by Drew Kirsch. To date, the music video has over 1.4 million views on YouTube (as of March 2018).

Reviews

Felix Heinecker from the German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated Jaehn's debut album I with four out of ten points and highlighted Cool as one of the five “highlights” of the album. Jaehn's competence in this field cannot be denied. The feeling for melody is there, as well as for the rhythm to rock along. Especially when soul comes into the mix like in cool .

Tim Tabens from the German-language website dance-charts.de described Cool as a groovy EDM - Pop number, which will certainly put a smile on people's faces. The track has the typical "good mood" that Jaehn is known for. The structure of the piece is kept very subtle. In terms of voice, the number has a lot to offer "relatively". A solid single from his first long player is cool .
