Sieber is a mountain village in the Upper Harz and district of Herzberg am Harz in the district of Göttingen (formerly Osterode ) in southern Lower Saxony ( Germany ). It has about 475 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018).

Geographical location

Sieber is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz Nature Park, about 7.5 km northwest of the heart of Herzberg. It extends from northeast-southwest to less than 2.5 km length in the narrow valley of the village tangent or -Zuflusses Sieber and the valley of the inflow-Sieber Goldenke to about 320 to 390  m above sea level. NN . The Harz National Park is located about 1.5 km west of Sieber , and the Siebertal nature reserve borders the village as part of the Sieber.

history

The place name goes back to the river Sieber, which was first recorded in 1287 as "Sevena". It is based on the Indo-European root * seu - / * sou - (rain, rinnen), which is a common base morpheme for hydronyms in Europe. The settlement can be documented for the first time in 1594 as “in der Seuer”, presumably initially only referring to an ironworks (1670: “the ironworks that Sieber took”).

Mining was at home in Sieber. Wood grinding shops were added later, producing preliminary products for the Herzberger and Rhumspringer paper mills. The buildings of the wood grinding shops are still there, but in a very poor condition. In addition, forestry was an important employer for several centuries.

In 1900, when Sieber was already known as a “climatic spa”, there were 742 spa guests and 575 residents.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, the Harz waterworks pursued plans to build the Sieber dam in the area of the village of Sieber on the river Sieber or above and below the village. The project was abandoned due to clear resistance from residents, particularly from localities in the southern Harz region.

Sieber belonged to the Zellerfeld district . On July 1, 1972, this was dissolved. Sieber was taken over in the district of Osterode am Harz and incorporated into the city of Herzberg am Harz.

The local council consists of eight (2011: 9) councilors and council women (changes compared to 2011).

Culture and sights

church

St. Benedictus Church
Panel paintings in the church

In 1887 the Protestant church of St. Benedictus was built in the Nordic style with a 35 m high tower in the center of Sieber. The wooden structure was clad with slate. The church organ is an instrument built in 2008 by Krawinkel in an Engelhardt brochure. The four painted panels depict the theme of sacrifice (from left to right): Isaac, the son of Abraham, with a bundle of wood; Aaron the high priest with a green staff; Melchizedek king of Salem with bread and wine; Abraham, the patriarch of the people of Israel with a ram. The parish belongs to the Harzer Land parish .

In the cemetery there is a war cemetery for German soldiers who died in April 1945.

hike

Sieber is the starting point for many hiking trails, for example the panorama path along the south side of the Sieber Valley (the first two pictures were taken from this path). An easy hiking trail leads to the Hotel Zum Paradies, about 2.5 km southwest . Difficult and longer hiking trails lead to the Hanskühnenburg , the Großer Knollen and to Sankt Andreasberg . A nature trail with 11 information and play stations leads around the village. At least four hiking destinations can be reached from Sieber, which are included in the system of stamping points of the Harzer hiking pin: Hanskühnenburg, Refuge Waidmannsruhe , Schadenbeeksköpfe and the Große Knollen . Sieber is located on the Harzer Baudensteig .

Harz mountain run

Sieber was the start and finish point of the Harz Mountain Run , which was organized annually in June by the MTV Herzberg (men's gymnastics club) until 2012.
