Siemens (entrepreneurial family)
Siemens is the name of a German family of entrepreneurs .
history
origin
The Siemens entrepreneurial family, which rose to the nobility in several European countries in the 19th century, is part of a bourgeois city dynasty of the imperial city of Goslar that is still widespread today . The Goslar family is first mentioned in a document on January 2, 1384 with the agricultural citizen Henning Symons .
The secure line of the entrepreneurial family begins with Ananias Siemens (* around 1538, † 1591). He was a citizen , brewer, oil miller and member of the shoemaker's guild in Goslar, where the family's ancestral home, the Siemenshaus , is located. After respected master craftsmen who held leading positions in Goslar guilds , the family also produced successful merchants from the beginning of the 17th century . It provided the imperial city with numerous guilds and councilors and four mayors , most recently Johann Georg (1748–1807). In the 18th century, the family belonged to the educated middle class and several family members leased large Gutsbetriebe in the Harz mountains , including Johann Georg Heinrich Siemens (1735-1805), and in the early 19th century whose son Christian Ferdinand Siemens , the father of the generation of entrepreneurs.
development
The branches of the entrepreneurial family that are most important for science and economy go back to the farmer and landlord Christian Ferdinand Siemens (1787–1840). His sons Werner , Carl , Hans , Friedrich and William worked as entrepreneurs and engineers . Werner Siemens founded the Telegraphen Bau-Anstalt von Siemens & Halske in Berlin in 1847 together with Johann Georg Halske , from which Siemens & Halske AG emerged in 1897 , in which many family members later worked in management. In 1966, under the management of Ernst von Siemens , Siemens & Halske AG merged with Siemens-Schuckertwerke AG and Siemens-Reiniger-Werke AG to form today's global corporation Siemens AG . As its largest single shareholder , the founding family is still represented on the Supervisory Board today .

Foundations
The entrepreneurial family has contributed part of their stake in the company to various family foundations , which mainly serve charitable purposes, in particular the promotion of art, culture, science and social issues: the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation , the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation , the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation , which supports public art collections in the purchase of important works of art and the Werner Siemens Foundation, which supports projects in the field of technology and natural sciences at universities and colleges. The Hertha von Siemens Foundation, founded in 1909, made it possible for company employees to stay in recreation centers and holiday homes for a small fee. A private family foundation has maintained the Siemenshaus in Goslar since 1916 as a collection point for the family archive with documents, pictures and books. The Siemens Foundation established by Siemens AG in 2008 as a corporate foundation to promote basic services, education and culture in developing and emerging countries has been headed by Nathalie von Siemens as spokeswoman for the board since 2013.
