The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport ( IATA : PHX , ICAO : KPHX ) in Phoenix is the most important of the four airports in the city and Arizona's main airport. It is one of the largest aviation hubs in the southwestern United States and is the 41st most frequented commercial airport in the world . Phoenix Airport is located a few kilometers southeast of the city center. It has three runways and three terminals .
The airport's General Aviation Terminal (GAT) is one of eight service centers for the Medevac airline Air Evac .
Location and transport links
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is seven kilometers east of downtown Phoenix. It is directly connected to Interstate 10 west of the airport and Arizona State Route 143 east of the airport . In addition, Interstate 10, Interstate 17 and US Highway 60 run on a common route southwest of the airport.

Furthermore, the airport is connected to the 44th Street / Washington Station of the Valley Metro Rail and to other bus routes by the people mover PHX Sky Train .
history
The airport has operated under its current name since 1935 after it was acquired by the City of Phoenix. In the 1950s it was served by four airlines.
future
In 2005, 41.2 million passengers frequented the airport. Due to the rapid increase in passengers, the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa , east of Sky Harbor, is to be expanded to also handle flights with the destination Phoenix. As a former air force base, the airport is generally suitable for landing larger aircraft.
Terminals
Terminal 4, opened in 1990, is the most modern and has by far the largest number of passengers. It bears the name of former Arizona Senator and presidential candidate Barry Goldwater and has 70 gates in seven sections. If necessary, there is enough space for an eighth section. A new tower (flight control center) was completed in 2006 and, at 102 meters, is the highest building at the airport.
The airport also has terminals numbered 2 and 3. Terminal 1 from 1952 was demolished when the airport was being expanded. The airport administration did not renumber the terminals to suit passengers' habits. Terminal 2 opened in 1962 and has one section and 19 gates . Terminal 3, opened in 1979, comprises 23 boarding gates, divided into two sections.
Airline lounges
- United Club ( United Airlines ) in Terminal 2.
- Crown Room Club ( Delta Air Lines ) in Terminal 3.
- US Airways Club ( US Airways ) in Terminal 4, at Gates A7, A19 and B5.
Airlines and Destinations
The most important company is American Airlines . Phoenix is also an important hub for the low-cost airline Southwest Airlines . Numerous flights lead to Mexico . The airport is only served non-stop from German-speaking countries by Condor Flugdienst . Phoenix can be reached with British Airways via London Heathrow or with other companies via Philadelphia or Washington .
