Social Progress Index 2018

The Social Progress Index (German for index of social progress) measures the extent to which a state can satisfy the economic, social and ecological needs of its citizens. The index is made up of a number of indicators on health, education, ecology, sustainability, security and personal freedom. The Social Progress Index is based on suggestions for alternative measures of prosperity from economists such as Amartya Sen , Douglass North and Joseph Stiglitz . Since the index does not measure the direct economic situation, but rather its social and ecological result, it is an alternative to conventional measured values ​​such as gross domestic product .

The Social Progress Index is published by the American non-governmental organization Social Progress Imperative . In 2016, the NGO and the European Commission published the EU Social Progress Index, which the European Union uses as an alternative measure of progress.

The index is based on the following three pillars:
