Place of pilgrimage for two religions
The waterfall, from which Sodo owes its name, is an important place of pilgrimage both in voodoo and for the Roman Catholic Church. Numerous Haitians practice both voodoo and Catholicism.
Voodoo pilgrimage
On 16th July 1841 or 1848 should Ezilie Freda , a revered in Voodoo charitable Loa (spirit), a man named Fortuné at the waterfall in Sodo appeared to be when he was looking for a runaway horse. Since then, Sodo has been considered a place of pilgrimage for voodoo believers who seek obsession with the spirit beings there. Besides Ezilie, Sodo is also sacred to Damballah , the highest benevolent spirit being in Haitian voodoo. The believers strip down to their underwear and bathe inside and below the waterfall during a cleansing ritual. Participation is free for all visitors and is welcomed, accommodation is only possible privately. Representatives of evangelical groups are active in Sodo and fight the Voodoo religion. On July 24th, the voodoo pilgrims move on to Plèn dinò in northern Haiti, where the warlike Loa Ogoun is worshiped. This worship is sometimes mistakenly perceived as devil worship .
Christian pilgrimage
Since Erzulie was equated with Mary , Sodo is also a place of pilgrimage and a place of apparition for the Roman Catholic Church . Every year on July 16 there is a large Christian pilgrimage with around 50,000 pilgrims. Christian pilgrims do not worship Mary in Sodo as Ezilie (Erzulie), but as Our Lady of Mount Carmel , in that capacity, patron saint of the Congregation of the Carmelites and the country of Haiti.
Protestant churches
As of January 2015, 15 Protestant churches of different denominations are also present in Sodo . They have no relation to the local Marian and Loa veneration.
Sodo in the movie
Wes Craven's horror film The Serpent in the Rainbow refers to alleged appearances of the Loa Ayida and Damballah in Sodo.
