The total solar eclipse of March 9, 2016 was essentially visible over the Pacific Ocean . The totality could be observed in Indonesia and Micronesia , in its partial phase the eclipse could be seen in China , India , Southeast Asia , Northern Australia and Alaska .

course

The umbra first reached Earth in the Indian Ocean . The total was almost two minutes when the shadow path first reached the mainland on the islands of Pagai Utara (North Pagai) and Pagai Selatan (South Pagai) off Indonesia . Subsequently, the shadow path crossed the south of Sumatra , whereby in Palembang a totality of exactly two minutes could be observed. Then the umbra passed over the Java Sea and also the island of Belitung and reached the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sulawesi . Halmahera was the last island in the Indonesian archipelago to be swept by the umbra before the eclipse path crossed the Pacific Northeast. On Halmahera the totality lasted more than three minutes.

The eclipse path passed Hawaii 1000 kilometers north , from where a coverage of 62 percent could be seen, the setting sun was still 12 degrees above the horizon.

Weather outlook

Since Sumatra and Borneo have tropical climates , there was only a ten percent chance there in March that the eclipse would be observable. The prospects in Sulawesi were only slightly better .

Observations

On Sumatra, the clouds made it impossible to observe the totality. In Palembang , the view was also clouded by thick clouds of smoke from a factory. On the other hand, totality could be observed on the other islands. For example in Sigi Biromaru and Luwuk in the province of Central Sulawesi and on the island of Ternate . Partial visibility was also partially impaired, with Hawaii , Tokyo and Hong Kong missing out, while large parts of Asia from Myanmar to Thailand , Java to Darwin in Australia had good visibility.
