Space Tours - Mission EVA is an Austrian trash science fiction - comedy from 2010 by the author and director Andreas Auinger . The film is a no-budget production whose basic artistic intention was to replace the feature film Plan 9 from Outer Space by US director Ed Wood as the worst film of all time.

action

The travel company Tuilet Touristik sends the spaceship VESS YUZNA on an intergalactic research mission. The five-person crew, consisting of the pilot Jess Franco , the two officers Dyanne Thorne and Ed Wood , the prospectus photographer Jean Rollin , and the supercomputer EVA, are to fly from planet to planet to collect data about the respective holiday destinations. The EVA supercomputer is supposed to analyze this data and process it into a virtual space cruise in order to avoid the dangers of a real space cruise.

The rival company Spektakel Reisen gets wind of the plan and sends its two best employees Vincent Price and Roger Corman to sabotage the mission and bring it to an early end with the help of a bomb. For support, Price and Corman ask Dr. Lloyd Kaufman make the reliable Killercyborg C64 . With the spaceship BAVA II, the trio makes their way to the party planet Tristesse to set a trap for YUZNA.

In the meantime, the YUZNA crew lands on the excursion planet Maledera to take over the data collected there - by the tour guide cyborg C. ombs. When the data was copied to EVA's hard drive, it turned out that the supercomputer had a major malfunction. The crew flies to the prison planet Fortress to entrust the computer designer, Kurt Plissken , who is imprisoned there, with the repair. He sends Franco and Rollin into EVA's matrix to reprogram a misdirected service program called Page Schmidt. Plissken now uses the opportunity to escape unnoticed with the help of his ex-wife Barbara Steele . After the repair of the supercomputer has been successfully completed, the YUZNA makes its way to the party planet Tristesse. There Price and Corman have already exchanged the tour guide cyborg stationed there for their killer cyborg C64. Although Franco, Thorne and Rollin narrowly escape the attack by the C64, they are separated on the planet: Franco and Rollin find themselves in the grip of test tourists. Thorne falls into the clutches of the giant monkey Kung-Fu. In addition, the C64 is hot on their heels. Franco and Rollin manage to escape from the tourist camp. They meet Thorne and Kung-Fu, free Thorne and, with the help of the giant monkey, shake off their pursuer C64. As soon as possible they will return to the YUZNA and leave the planet.

Price and Corman lie in wait with the YUZNA's BAVA II and fire a bomb at the ship. In the final showdown, the crew of the YUZNA flee from the bomb and into another dimension. There they discover the planet Shangri-La , which is considered the ultimate vacation paradise, and decide to enjoy the vacation there for the rest of their lives.

background

Due to a lack of budget, screenwriter, director and producer Andreas Auinger had to do without technical aids such as camera or crane drives in the implementation of his film, which is based on the dramaturgy of a Hollywood blockbuster . He tried to compensate for this shortcoming with a script overloaded with numerous twists and turns and a rushed staging. Above all, rapid location changes and a rapid cut should make the film appear very lively and entertaining, despite its static orientation. The main plot of the film is used to parody well-known Hollywood blockbusters. There is hardly a scene or dialogue in the film that does not allude to a well-known Hollywood film: Alien , Matrix , Terminator , Star Wars , Star Trek , Planet of the Apes , Dune , The Body Eaters are Coming , King Kong , Frankenstein or Metropolis . But films from other genres and TV series are also represented: Patton , Titanic , Lord of the Rings , The Hunt for Red October , An Officer and a Gentleman , Moulin Rouge , Rocky , Batman , Superman , A Nightmare on Elm Street , Friday the 13th , Halloween , Mission: Impossible , Knight Rider , 24 , The Simpsons or The Waltons .

The characters in the film were named after actors and directors well-known in the genre: For example, the cyborg tour guide, based on Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator, bears the name C. ombs, after Jeffrey Combs , the leading actor from the Re-Animator series. The YUZNA and BAVA II spaceships are named after the directors Brian Yuzna as well as Mario Bava and Lamberto Bava . Whether in BAVA II the II refers to both directors or only Mario's son Lamberto (Bava, the second) is meant, the film leaves to the interpretation of the viewer.

Double interpretations are also typical for the film: If, for example, at the end of the film, the crew of the YUZNA meets the spaceship LOST HORIZON in another dimension, which suddenly disappeared in search of the ultimate holiday paradise of Shangri-La, you can't only as a parody of Paul WS Anderson's horror science fiction film Event Horizon - Understand at the Edge of the Universe , but also as an homage to Frank Capra's classic In the Fetters of Shangri-La (original title: Lost Horizon). Contemporary references to Austrian domestic politics and well-known Austrian postcard motifs can also be discovered in the context of the film: For example, there are allusions to Karl-Heinz Grasser or Defense Minister Norbert Darabos and Auinger lets the Grazer Kunsthaus (nickname: Friendly Alien) fly over the Graz as an advertising plane Clock tower fly.

production

The film was made in Graz with a budget of zero euros and, according to the company, cost only 266.27 euros in the end. The film was shot in a former wine cellar. When production was evicted, they were forced to pause for a year. Only when an abandoned school building was available for production could filming be finished. The year break can primarily be identified in the film based on the hair of the main actor János Mischuretz, which is reduced from shoulder-length to neck-length in the course of the plot.

The cast of the film represents a cross-section of the rich Graz off-theater scene: János Mischuretz and Ursula Bruck from the Graz brushes . Rainer Kantz and Eugen Fasching from the small comedy . Ulli Emmer and Eva Weutz from the theater in the basement . Georg Gröchenig from the TTZ Graz . Siegfried Galler from the Grazer Volkstheater . Agnes Julia Redl from Theater Absolut . August Hammer from the comedians St. Leonhard . In addition, the freelance artist, singer and actor Gregor Schenker, solo cabaret artist Oliver Hochkofler, as well as the young actors from the fairy tale theater Das Podium , Carina Fromm, Patrick Schnalzer and Lubomir Polach will be involved. All actors worked without a fee. The team behind the camera consisted of just three people, along with Auinger - who, in addition to the script, production and direction, also took care of the equipment, sound, lighting, camera, editing and visual effects: production manager Helge G. Suppan and the student Reinhard Koller and Dieter Scheitz, for whom the term MFA (Multiple Functional Assistant) was introduced and who also worked free of charge. In the post-production, 3D artist Klaus Stangl with his animations and Norbert Mehrl, who is responsible for the sound design and the film music, again supported the production free of charge.

Austrian celebrities were also persuaded to perform short appearances without a fee: singer and actor Eik Breit ; Sports reporter Robert Seeger ; Moderator Markus “Gonzo” Renger; Actor Wolfgang Pampel ; Actor, director and presenter Frank Hoffmann ; Serial actress Kristina Sprenger ; Cabaret artist Marion Petric; Ex-ski racer Helmut Höflehner and ORF presenter Dominic Heinzl .
