The Spey (spelling sometimes also Spei ) is a field line and a nature conservation and FFH area of the same name in the dike foreland on the left bank of the Lower Rhine on the border from Meerbusch to Krefeld .
Protected area
The nature reserve "Die Spey" consists of two parts of the same name, formally separated and roughly equal in size: the northern half (identifier KR-003 ) is in the area of the city of Krefeld (district Linn ), the southern half (identifier NE-006 ) belongs to the Rhein-Kreis Neuss and is located in the area of the city of Meerbusch ( Nierst district ).
Both areas together form a Natura 2000 / FFH area of over 100 hectares under the same name (identifier DE-4606-301 ).
The area is in close contact with the adjoining FFH area Latumer Bruch to the west with Buersbach , Stadtgraeben and waterworks (identifier DE-4605-301 ) and is integrated into the biotope network of southern Krefeld .
Biotope structure: fauna and flora
With its location in the recently flooded , forest and grassland foreshore, the Spey forms a valuable, near-natural biotope complex made up of structures and habitat types typical of floodplains in contact with meadow and pasture grassland and small-scale arable land . The area represents a characteristic section of the Rhine floodplain landscape with a diverse range of habitats and is one of the larger, relatively well-preserved relic areas in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The following habitat types can be found in the Spey :
- especially in the southern part of softwood alluvial forests including their pre-forest stages (FFH type 91E0), mainly made of white willow , but also alder and ash
- especially in the northern part extended lowland hay meadows and Stromtalwiesen with wet Hochstaudenfluren (FFH type 6430), oat grass - and burnet - Silgenwiesen (FFH type 6510)
- especially on the banks of the Rhine and on the lake mentioned below, mud bank meadows with reeds and sedges as well as open sand and gravel areas
In the southern part of the Spey is a lake that emerged from a wet excavation and is in contact with the Rhine. Together with the wetlands and riparian zones mentioned above, this serves as a resting area, spawning area and habitat for fish (e.g. river lamprey ), amphibians and birds living near the water .
The Spey is particularly valuable as a breeding, resting and feeding area for various water and meadow birds and as a stepping stone biotope for migratory birds . There are rare species such as the nightingale , oriole and little ringed plover , and in isolated cases particularly endangered species such as ruff or dwarf warrior .
Among the numerous insect species, the endangered dark blue ant is particularly worth mentioning.
