history

Foundation and time of National Socialism

During the National Socialist era , the musician and pianist Heinz Eccarius was commissioned by Mayor Erich Deter in 1934 to carry out fundamental restructuring of the cultural life of the city of Hamm in accordance with National Socialist ideologies. He first dissolved all existing musical associations and combined them to form the municipal concert and choir association . From 1937 the establishment of a music school was considered. At first a singing school was founded with the choir director Fritz Meyer . Due to resolutions of the Reich Ministry for Science, Education and National Education , the singing school could not work according to the model of the municipal singing school Augsburg , as originally planned , but had to orientate itself on the guidelines of the National Socialists. Due to this development, the opening date planned for April 1939 was postponed the music school on October 1st. However, due to the beginning of the Second World War , the opening could not take place until February 1, 1940. Eccarius was appointed school administrator, Meyer his deputy. In addition, part-time teachers were brought in.

The music school initially comprised the youth music school and the folk music school, and a department for adults was installed in 1941. Initially, recorder groups were taught, followed by six singing classes as well as violin and piano lessons by May 1940 . The lessons took place in the rooms of the school building on the ground floor of the house Caldenhofer Weg 14, in the ballroom of the old Hammer town hall as well as in the rooms of the West School III, the City School for Girls and the North School I.

Despite the adversities caused by the war, the school continued to run until September 1944, when the increasingly violent air wars in autumn 1944 forced them to give up classes. The school building was completely destroyed in one of the attacks. Shortly after the end of the war, music director Eccarius was dismissed from service because of his National Socialist past.

After the end of the war, Josef Kemper was entrusted with preparing the reopening of the school. In 1948 teaching could be resumed, initially with 4 singing classes. In the fall of 1950 classrooms were made available on the third floor of the town hall. The instrumental lessons were initially in the subjects of recorder , flute , violin , cello and piano . In 1952 the number of students had increased to 625.

After Kemper suddenly died in 1953, Martin Wolschke , who had already taught at the school, took over the acting school management and in April 1954 the regular management. Since the spatial conditions were no longer suitable for the school, which now had 1200 students, the city of Hamm made the building at Südstrasse 42 available to the music school. After extensive renovation work, the opening took place in 1958. During these years the subjects guitar , clarinet , double bass , oboe , trumpet , trombone and French horn were added to the curriculum, the focus of teaching had shifted from singing to instrumental lessons.

The music school began to occupy a permanent place in the city's cultural life. Clubs and associations have repeatedly invited students and ensembles from the music school to accompany their events with music, also outside of Hamm. From 1963 onwards, matinees were held on Sundays. From 1965 there was an exchange of experiences, teachers and students with the folk art schools in Karlsbad and Prague .

In the long run, the house on Südstrasse was unable to solve the space shortage. The question of a new building therefore arose again. In 1968 the Association of Friends and Patrons of the Hamm Municipal Music School joined the Association for the first time . V. together. Until 1971, benefit concerts were held and donations were collected. After extensive planning work, the new building began in 1972 and was completed in 1974.

In March 1976, Martin Wolschke left school. The new music school director was Joshard Daus , who also took up his post as city music director . One of his most important goals was to set up an orchestra school. He headed the school until 1978. His successor from 1979 was Norbert Edelkötter , a brother of the composer Ludger Edelkötter, who came from Hövel (now part of the Bockum-Hövel district in the city of Hamm) . He took up the concept of an orchestral school, put it into practice and developed it further. Edelkötter also established annual rehearsal trips to Oostmalle and Aigen in the Ennstal as well as workshops with André Gertler and Gerhard Bosse . During his tenure, numerous demanding concert performances and projects took place, such as the 1998 performance of the children's opera Brundibár , which received nationwide attention and was rehearsed with the participation of Paul Aron Sandfort .

After Edelkötter retired in 1998, Bernd Smalla took over the management of the school, who had previously worked as a teacher in the brass section of the music school. With the installation of new and the expansion of existing departments such as the popular area, there was also a shift in focus within the music school in order to meet contemporary requirements for teaching. Since then, lessons have also taken place in the city districts.

In 2009 the City Council of Hamm decided to build a new music school. The planning was carried out by the Stuttgart architects Wulf & Partner . A two-story extension, an additional attic, eight classrooms, six rehearsal rooms for bands, two rooms for the youth art school, a large rehearsal room for a symphony orchestra, big band and wind orchestra and a musical stage were planned. Overall, the music school at the old location was to be expanded by 1350 square meters. During the renovation, the music school moved to the old city library building. After completion of the construction work started in 2010, the new opening took place in January 2012.
